RI. Haven't been in the saddle in awhile, but you can ask Sonic--the trails we used to ride in MA were pretty challenging at times. A 1-mile granny gear honk isn't going to be compatible w/ a fixie.
Most of the trails around here involve some decent hills.

clipless is one of the best things i ever did on a bike... lets you get the power down and feet stay where you want em (on the pedals usualy haha)... lot more control of the bike... at least thats how it was for me on a MTB...
around here SS is pretty big... although everyone thought i was nuts for riding rigid (although i have gears haha)...
