Who is messing with my battery life? It seems to me this has happened previously on other phones, Verizon customer for many phones.

Galaxy S5 has suddenly developed random excess battery usage. Phone gets hot from battery usage, not a failing battery. My next test is to keep all apps closed to eliminate a rogue app as suspect.

When I figure this out one of them is likely to loose a customer.

Will an unlocked phone prevent this orchestrated upgrade encouragement? Well no I guess if it is Samsung who is behind this.

Eyeballing an unlocked MotoG5S+, any feedback?

I have no input into why for battery.

I do however like the MotoG5S+.  If I had to replace my Moto X Pure 2015, the MotoG5S+ is what I would likely get (or maybe MotoX4)

Its probably some app doing you dirty. I've got an s8+ on tmo and it happens to me when I get a rogue setup.

My S5 with Verizon does this too randomly. Usually when something is being downloaded in the background like an update. I am about to get a new phone though.

I'm about to run a different OS on my Verizon Galazy Ass4. They can take their bloat ware and berkeley off.

Try doing a factory reset.  If it's a software issue like an app, that will take care of it.  If it's hardware, you can always replace the battery on a GS5.

If you do decide to replace it, the Moto G line is very well-regarded.

I got sick of short battery life - like not making it until 5 PM - on my Samsung and reset it back to it's factory state.   Loaded security updates and then disabled nearly all of the built-in apps.

Didn't install anything that reports back to the mothership.

Didn't install apps to access website data,  just created a shortcut to the website.

Got another four - five hours out of the battery.

Yeah, my S6 is being crappy lately. I have the suspicion that Samsung and Verizon want me to update my phone so they make it suck on battery life, but that sounds like a conspiracy which I'm normally against. But this is a megacompany, and megacompanies do crappy things all the time.

It is rather annoying. Maybe my next phone should be unlocked phone.

No facebook or other rogue apps, no browser or map software running.

Texting, email, Pandora open.

Can't be pandora the out cry would come from far and wide.

Cleared cached data recently? Sometimes that can cause issues.

I seem to remember Android OS having a way to check what apps are using what % of battery life.  Maybe start there?

The newer versions do, but a GS5 is probably stranded a couple of versions back. It's a 4-year-old smartphone, which is kind of an eternity these days.  I'd just replace it with a new mid-market one of some kind.

I have sprint and find that they regularly make changes to their bloatware that suck my battery life. I have disabled everything I can that is sprint or samsung pay related and that made a big difference for me.

My S5 was doing weird stuff like that before I replaced it. It was a great phone in its prime, but the lack of built-in storage and the annoying battery life became too much to bear, even with one of those external battery cases. The bigger problem with mine was the storage: mine was the 16gb model. Even with a 128gb card in it, the apps that you couldn't move made it constantly full and used up all the RAM trying to tell me that it was full. I upgraded to a S8 with 64gb of onboard storage and that fixed that problem.

I'm on Verizon.

My S4, S5, S6, and current S7 have all done this at random.
