We may have to find a car that doesn't dissolve at the first whiff of salt on the road, that's halfway fun to drive and big enough to hold the various massage implements like a massage table my wife occasionally needs to ferry around. And it has to be an automatic as my wife doesn't drive a manual.
A low mileage late V70R has popped up on FB marketplace that may or may not be for sale still (ad is pretty old) and if I can convince her that it's OK to drive a station wagon for a bit, it might tick all the boxes.
I remember from previous discussion on here that the P80 (ie, the predecessor platform) was considered almost impervious to rust - is that still the case with the later P2 platform?
I wish you had asked this a month ago. A car-guy friend of mine just traded his wife's 2008 Cross Country in to Carvana. One owner and in super nice condition and it was so cheap ($3471) that I almost bought it just for the heck of it.
I would imagine so. For all it's niggling issues, my son's 2009 S40 is absolutely spotless after 13 Michigan winters, even underneath. Granted, that's the P1 platform, but I'm sure the P2 is similar. Honestly, from what I've seen living in the rust belt, Volvo's corrosion protection is the best in the industry.

That does sound like a bit of a deal.
It's not decision time yet, right now it's more proactive research as it pretty much hinges on how long my wife's Range Rover will last (or not, see minor rant thread - too much shoddy work that I discovered, plus some suspicion that not all the work I paid for on this truck was performed as we expected).
I'd really like a vehicle that I won't have to worry about if either of us drives it in the winter and/or in an encounter with Suicidal Bambi.

The P2 platform is actually more rust resistant than the old P80. My old 2004 XC70 was still mostly rust-free after 17 years of neglect and sleeping outside. Most cars dissolve after 10 years around here.
And the P3 seem to be just as good if not better, except for some weirdness (S80 and XC90 V8 subframes)
Are bolt heads on the P2's also corrosion resistant? Or is an exhaust flange bolt also going to be unremovable?

Again, my experience is based on the P1, but no. The exhaust bolts are no better than anyone else's. I had to cut and drill them out when I replaced the cat on my son's car.
Yep, can confirm the P2s are even better than the P80s in regard to rust resistance. They are finished and screwed together very well.
You will still fight the occasional piece of hardware but at least the car isn't crumbling around you while you do it.
The P80s rusted out around here, P2s do not.
This is most of why I own a P2.
Now if only Volvo had applied this level of corrosion protection to the Nedcar S40s (pre 2004.5). I liked that S40 better as a car, despite it not being all wheel drive, but jeez. It was getting pretty bad when I sold it in 2017 after owning it for three years.
The S60R looks better everywhere now after 4.5 years (and 90k miles) of ownership than the S40 ever did.
I still look at classifieds for one of those old S40s, but I don't need another car I can't drive in the winter.
