Just sitting in my garage, crying in my beer

This morning I was greeted with a phone call saying my grandfather had passed away during the night.

We knew it was coming, just didn't think it would hit me this hard.

He was one of the kindest , smarter men I knew.

My regret today is not visiting him more in the last year at the nursing home. Maybe I tried to justify it as not being able to cope with his declining physical and mental health.

This Friday, I will have to do one of the hardest things in my life and carry him down the aisle of his funeral with my oldest son beside me.

Interesting what you learn at the funeral and associated days. From my uncles and aunts I learned things about my grandfather that I now try to model and I believe has made a permanent and positive change in me and how I parent.

I raise a beer with you, but I also think you will find much good from this.

BTDT, about 8 years ago. Funny thing, I thought I knew my grandad awfully well, from all the things he taught me. But the stuff I had never heard him talk about all came out during the eulogy. And it was amazing! Example: He never once mentioned that he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for developing the process by which Sunoco was able to manufacture massive quantities of 130/140 (115/145) AvGas for the WWII air war effort. Sorry to thread jack, your post just got me remembering...

My grandfather wasn't quite so adorable, but I was very sad he didn't get to come to my wedding. I almost drove down to get him myself, but I had a little scheduling problem if you can imagine. Many things I didn't find out about him until after his death and my aunt's (his daughter)death and they weren't exactly positive. Glad your experiences were much better. You will always have those memories. The best memory of my grandfather was when I hooked a 3 lb. bass in a farm pond and was yelling for him to come help. He had to run a long way around the pond to get to me. I was maybe 6 YO at the time. The very next cast I caught a 1.5 lb. bass. He told that story many times.

I'm not all that proud of many things I have done in my life. The one thing I strive for from this point forward is to be a good grandfather. I have three grandsons that need all the help they can get.

Sorry for your loss I think the best way we can honor those who have died is to life your life in a way that would make them proud.
