No problems here, but when you're shooting up innocent subjects because of avoidable mistakes, there is a problem.

strawman, anyone? These people are supposed to be trained to handle these high stress situations. They're completely ignoring/forgetting the BASICS... you know, like knowing your target? The simple stuff. Amped up? Fine. I would expect that. Knowing WHAT you are shooting at and WHO you are shooting at are first priority.
Look, if they can't handle the stress, they are in the wrong line of work. DOn't like hte danger? Don't be a cop. That's part of the job. Shooting innocent people, crashing cars into the WRONG COLORED TRUCK are just not acceptable.
Let's flip this.... what would happen if I opened fire on a vehicle in my driveway and shot the people inside because they were jsut using my driveway to turn around? Could I use the "Oh, I thought it was someone else that wanted to kill me" excuse and not go to prison?

Yeah, you're right, after a shooting all of the police should just open fire on anyone within range of the crime scene.

As an aside, I think its a little amusing/disturbing that there's so much more anger/frustration in this thread about the police screwing up than there is about the fact that one of their ex-officers killed a police officer and two police family members and has plans to kill more.
Man writes threatening manifesto accusing the LAPD of violating the civil rights of civilians.
LAPD responds by shooting three civilians (so far) in the manhunt for their accuser.
While I don't agree with this guys tactics, and he is clearly a nutlog, the LAPD sure is doing a lot to help him prove his point so far. Would they have the same scorched earth policy to finding someone threatening to kill civilians? To someone who had not tried to expose what he saw as rampant corruption?
And I'm sure there's a line around the block to buy the book and movie rights already.

Exactly. The rogue cop needs to be taken down, no question. But his entire point here was to point out how inept and corrupt the LAPD is. And they are simply making his argument for him.
Part of his manifesto (which I actually read) deals with the so-called "Blue Line"--the fact that cops stick up for cops and that they don't tolerate "snitches." It also discusses how LAPD doesn't actually care about civilians and looks at murder victims as new ATVs and boats, in other words, extra cash from overtime. He makes the argument that LAPD doesn't actually care about civilians.
If this guy were shooting civilians instead of "brother officers," I really don't think LAPD would be acting this way.

The guy that has killed three people, will go to trial* or go down in a blaze of glory for his actions. The cops that have so far (thankfully) only injured civilians will be covered by a payout from the department and the "blue line."

I'm counting more than 50 bullet holes in the back of that Toyota. The responding officers were not fired upon, and all rounds were fired before officers had a positive ID on the suspect. Damn.

The complete version rambles a bit more at the end, and seems to make him appear both more human and more crazy at the same time. Apparently he was really looking forward to seeing The Hangover III.
And I bet LL Cool J's phone has already rung to see if he wants to play this guy in the film version.

I read that thing yesterday. Several things are quite scary. First of all, he considers himself already dead. He has already written his life off. Nothing to lose.
Secondly, he had at least some exposure to classified military intelligence pertaining to Al Qaeda and other terrorist cells, including how they wage asymmetric warfare and what does and does not work. He is also military-trained. He furthermore knows how LAPD operates.
What is most disturbing is the fact that his manifesto, excluding the parts where he discusses killing and targeting LAPD officers, is actually well-written.

He's intelligent, trained and motivated with nothing to lose. You don't get more deadly than that.
