78 years old (I honestly thought he was older), Larry has shuffled off this mortal coil.
He was a very polarizing character to be sure.

Oh, so you're Larry Flint ......that Larry Flint??????........hmm let me check the register......sorry
Used to go to his strip club in San Diego. They offered free lunch but you had to buy a drink. The girls were very very aggressive during lunch as well.
He also had a cool house in Point Loma. HATE to flash a black light in there...
Hustler Magazine woke me up to the fact that the porn industry was a very seedy, lowlife, dysfunctional mess of broken, women disrespecting, delusional people. This was after buying one copy and actually reading the articles after looking at the photos. Mid-1970's when I was a teenager. I thank Larry Flynt for that awakening.
He was also hugely into Kennedy Assassination Theories and published some "special" run magazines devoted solely to outlining his theories.

His magazine pushed... ok destroyed... the boundary of good taste and perversion. Was he as big a perv. in his private life, as his mags? I don't have a clue myself. Playboy had a bit of taste in the mag., but the owner WAS a perv.!
The courthouse used in the movie with Woody Harrelson in it was in the town I graduated High School from. That's about the only thing I knew about him other than he published Hustler.

For some reason, I thought Larry died about 10 years ago. Maybe I was thinking of Heff. Is Guccione still around?
Perverted dude who claimed to be a free speech proponent faded away with nothing to say, and everyone thought he was already dead. Huh.

That's a pretty good movie. One of the first times I realized what a good actor Woody is.
IMO, you need boundary-pushers like Larry. He may have been a tasteless scumbag, but he broke some free speech barriers, too.

Agreed. I may or may not like what you show or say.
But I don't have to.
In reply to Tom_Spangler (Forum Supporter) :
Sorry. I disagree.
His "freedom of speech" was commercial speech. He wanted the right to say what he wanted for the purpose of making money for himself (sometimes by violating other people's rights). Though he won some legal battles, that just means he had some good lawyers. OJ won some legal battles too.
His commercial speech is different than political speech and does not have the same protections.
I'm not aware of any free speech barriers he broke down that didn't also violate others. The right to exploit others for personal gain? Yeah, that's not a thing.
I will defend to death the right of others to speak things that are sometimes unpleasant to me.
I will not grant people the right to exploit others and violate their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the pursuit of money.
I see no hero here.
I'm gonna stand down. I have a personal issue with speaking poorly of people who have passed away, and I think I have crossed my own personal boundary. If not, I've come awfully close.
RIP.

I was never offended by his magazine, or by him, myself. But I do agree with you on the points you make about rights. He pushed boundary's for no other reason than profit - at least so it seems. I have the feeling he was not that big a perv in his personal life... just saw a way to make money. Not sure why I think that, cause I had no experiences with the man. Just seemed driven by profit without regards to others. No different that most, as far as that goes!
In reply to 03Panther :
To clarify, I didn't say I was offended by his magazine. I spent many hours enjoying it.
I just don't see in him a champion of free speech.
Neither does his daughter.

Which is what made it so good
