OK so for spring break we want to go someplace warm. We are thinking Biloxi MS.

Is this an OK spot? will it be full of spring break college kids? Whats to do?

Thanks!

Not so much full. I'd call to double check, but it's more the "hidden gem" place. If I recall, the beach is super-shallow. I've walked out into the sound a half mile without the water going over my knees.

Ooh, I can answer! My wife lived there for years and we have been there many times.

We really like the area, and hope to retire down there eventually. Our kids like it down there, but that was mainly due to the beach, mall, etc.

I lived in Pascagoula for a year, and we used to vacation there occasionally when I was a kid since we lived in North MS. Biloxi won't be nearly as packed during spring break as Gulf Shores will be. I like Gulf Shores beaches better though. In Biloxi there is a long pier where the light house is and the water is chest deep all the way to the end. Take the ferry out to Ship Island, it has some interesting history, and has an old civil war era fort (Fort Massachusetts) on it. Other than that I'm not sure what touristy stuff there is. A lot of stuff was wiped out by Katrina, and I don't know what came back and what didn't. If you have a day, go over to Dauphin Island in Alabama. There is a civil war era fort there also (Fort Gaines), and also an Estuarium.

In reply to moparman76_69:

Fort Morgan is also by Gulf Shores, correct? Went there quite a bit as a kid.

I went there with some friends a little over 10 years ago. We fished by day, and gambled by night. Did pretty well with both. That is to say we caught a lot of fish, and didn't lose much money!

Yes, Fort Morgan sits opposite Fort Gaines at the entrance to Mobile Bay. There is a ferry that runs from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan.

When I was there while in the Air Force, it still had a little of the small town feel. Loved it. Now, not so much.

I haven't been back in almost 20 years, but you could walk out to the barrier islands at low tide with a short swim across the channel. Lots of different fish to be caught out there, eel, stingray, black drum, flounder, cast netting for shrimp in the back bay was was always a good time, you rarely came back empty handed. If you can get your hands on a boat get out near the rigs for some really great fishing, shark trout etc. HUGE alligator gar in the back bay. I'm pretty sure they closed both of the aquariums out there as they were both on the beach, and I'm told It's mostly hotels and casinos now.

Daulphin island is about an hour or so away(camping beaches etc, I think there is an old fort out there as well). As well as the uss Alabama museum/park you get to climb and walk around an old battleship and submarine there.

I used to live there, even owned the local stock car track for a while (which is now closed for good). The beaches are kinda E36 M3ty because the water is always dark brown due to the Mississippi and Pearl rivers dumping out in close proximity.

That being said you can take the ferry ride out of Gulfport to Ship Island, the beaches are nice and there's a cool old fort, definitely worth the boat ride.

The casinos are nice if you're into that kind of thing, and they have awesome buffets. Also, do yourself a favor and go to Pirate's Cove in Pass Christan for a roast beef poboy.

There's not much car stuff other than the Imperial Palace car collection, the Wed night brackets at Gulfport Dragway, and a pretty good junkyard at the I-10 Menge Ave Long Beach exit called Barry's U-pull-it.

There's also some reasonable charter fishing to be had if you shot around. I would recommend the "Skipper" out of Biloxi small craft harbor

Dauphin Island has a fort too, and is accessible by car. Ship Island is 12 miles out from Biloxi and only accessible by boat

My grandfather gave us a 16ft cobia with a 150 on it when we lived there. So we made the run to both by boat on a fairly regular basis. Grandpa upgraded to a 24 ft boat with twin 100's behind it. I was a kid well 13 when we left, I was serious when I said its been 20 years other than a stop over at keesler when I was on my way home from a road trip, didn't take any time to sight see, wish I would have.

I do remember the giant rats that ran the firefighters out when someone set the old VA hospital on fire.

I miss the Broadwater. My dad had a 44ft cabin cruiser that we would stay on during summer weekends.
