regarding steel roofs, I asked the roofers about it. It is MUCH more expensive. Mine would have been $20k at least.
Put a roof on my house a few years ago. Shingles would have been in the $5k range (several quotes), steel was $7k, and I went with a well known local guy with an excellent reputation, so it wasn't a cut rate job.
Nobody around here uses shingles anymore.
