I have a Kobo. I find it to be pretty similar to the Nook I had before that burned out. I actually haven't used it in about a year.

I also have used Overdrive from my library, but for whatever reason mine requires downloading the book file on a computer, loading it into Adobe Digital Editions, and then syncing that to the e-reader, which doesn't always work. It's honestly a pretty huge pain.

I also have a first gen Kindle Fire. It kind of sucks as a tablet, but it worked fine for the books I got from the Kindle Lending Library or whatever that's called. That one hasn't been turned on in about 2 years now though.

As you can probably guess, I have mostly given up on reading books on these.

The first gen Kindle Fires don't have enough memory to run modern Android releases, so you're pretty much stuck with the software they came with. It works OK as an e-reader, but it's not so great as a general purpose tablet.

I have a Kindle PaperWhite 2, it's great.

It sounds like if I go the Kindle route, the second gen on up are the way to go for ease of being able to download books and usage?
