So yesterday was my niece's 18th birthday. In the past I have made her things like a sewing machine table, fixed the air conditioning on her car, and other time consuming "gifts". Every time it was a greated with a thanks uncle Todd. This year, I had to work a couple of hours in the morning. Wife and kids were suppose to head out and pick up a gift. I got home and everybody was scattered around the house and the kitchen was destroyed. They chose to make waffles, bacon, and fruit salad instead of heading out for a gift. No time now to stop for anything other than a card. I took the cash I had made over the last couple of hours, and stuffed it in an envelope. Gave it to the niece for her birthday. Got the biggest hug I've ever gotten from the kid. Her mom, my sister, gave me the dirtiest look, and I was in heaven. The way I look at it, my time is important. Spend 10 hours making a table, or 6 hours doing an ac compressor on a VW CC, or 2 hours on a shower valve; whats easier for me? So in this case money trumps time and effort. Plus I got to make my stuck up sister squirm that I gave her daughter more money than she did. Step up your game sis. Oh and the party, my sister thought it would be cute to throw a high tea party. Lots of tea, no coffee or beer. Lots of tiny little cucumber and cream cheese sandwich triangles, and pastry, no real food. Hit Wendy's on the way home because I was starving.
I have a 16 year old daughter - cash and food always makes her happy.
One day I bought her ramen and had my wife put it in a pan and toss a cutting board and cookbook out and to pretend she made it when she got home from school.
She totally didn't believe my wife made ramen - she knew it was from Kitakata.

My great aunt gave cash or a check to everyone after they were about 12. “It’s always the right size and it’s always just what they needed”
And honestly, that is exactly right. We had a lot of people help us in various ways over the past few months. The things that helped the most were people giving cash or checks, and the people giving time and energy. That basket of food? Went to waste, sorry. The gift card to a fast food restaurant? Forgot about it, it’s out of the way. Cold hard cash, that helped pay for a doctors bill. That was what we needed.
Cash is King it's always the right color and fits perfectly.
cash is just so universal. it can be used for anything...so for a younger kid, cash is king
Cash = perfect color, goes with everything.
With cash, she's able to buy something she wants or pay for an activity she wants to do. I don't get why anybody would be against cash as a gift for a teen.
Aside from Transformers, my 7 year old loves getting money. He’s ahead of the game

Unless it’s lowes/depot or summit racing, a gift card says “here I got you something to give to someone else when you’re in a pinch and don’t have a $20 bill”
I wish you were local. I would gladly pay you to do my plumbing jobs. Most are quite small.
I spent a couple of hours yesterday replacing a cut-off valve under the kitchen sink . I have done several over the years and it doesn't get any easier. Today my right hip feels so bruised I can hardly walk.
