Supposedly there was video on Conan of Willie auditioning to be Gandalf that Willie sent to Peter Jackson before The Hobbit was in production.

Couldn't have made the movie any worse - it might actually have been entertaining, then.

Always gives me chills.

I know you won't believe these thing I tell you
I know you won't believe
your heart has been forewarned all men will lie to you
and your mind cannot conceive
now all depends on what I say to you
and on your doubting me
so I've prepared these statements far from true
to fuel your disbelief

The sun is filled with ice and gives no warmth at all
the sky was never blue
the stars are raindrops searching for a place to fall
and I never cared for you

If you haven't heard the album of demos released a few years ago called Crazy, stop what you're doing and track it down. He got huge during a period of, shall we say, less than stellar taste in production and arrangement, so it's easy to associate him with a dated aesthetic. But his early demos strip everything away and leave only incredible songwriting in spare, sometimes dark recordings. I can't recommend it highly enough.

It's always time for a smoke and a whisky, hold the whisky.

Does this one include Blackjack County Chain?

No, Crazy is a collection of demos from the early '60s of songs he was pitching to Ray Price's label...the name of which escapes me. By all accounts it was a pretty dark time for Willie. He hadn't yet broken into performing at all, and was only selling songs sporadically. He was living in a motel away from his wife and baby, and just generally struggling. The songs seem to reflect a lot of that.

I live 20 mins away from his bar/saloon out in the hill country and I've never been. Really love him in the studio. Live.....I've seen him twice and been wildly underwhelmed both times.

I wonder if Willie Nelson is my Mom.

I saw him live once, he would have been 75 or 76 back then. I was extremely impressed with it as I was expecting an old man. Sure, he was old, but the performance was full of energy. Also, I was surprised at how musically talented he was. The dude is not a country musician, but a jazz guitarist and folk singer.

Had a beer on him once many years ago and didn't know it. Back before his tax issues he had apple orchards around Yakima, WA and we used to go to the military base there often (Yakima Firing Center). There was a bar just outside post there called the Pomona and we'd go there for beers. One time the bell over the bar rang (someone buying a round) and a beer was set in front of everyone and someone left the bar. After that someone left the bartender said the round was on Willie. He often stopped in when he was in town and always bought a round on leaving. Didn't recognize him as that was really the last place you'd expect to see someone like him.
