+1 on the Smartwool socks. I wear the skiing/snowboarding ones all winter. They end just below the knee and I've never had them fall down. They normally retail for $20 a pair IIRC. My girlfriend picked up a bunch on clearance at Nordstrom for $7 or $8 a pair towards the end of last winter. I despise mid calf socks. They always fall down.

I used to wear Thorlo socks in the winter, but they don't breathe very well and I would end up with swamp feet.

I am a bit of a sock snob -- real wool socks are fantastic. I prefer Icebreaker to Smartwool, but I must say the Smartwools I have have been more durable than the Icebreakers.

I'd rather have fewer pairs of quality socks than many pairs of cheap socks.
