So my s.o and I have an opportunity to move from the land of "Fargo" to just about anywhere in the states... and it looks like there will be a new store opening up in lexington, ky...
So far it seems nice... Fits Taiden's (as well as some of my requirements).
First off the cost of living is stupid cheap down there... a two bed room two bath apartment with just about everything is about$ 800 bucks... here it would be about $1200...
Secondly, their craigslist action for cars looks interesting... lots of "mudders" but a lot of cars from the 80's (minimal rust) and some unique cars...I think craigslist is a good way to determine areas...
It seems nice...and while I know I WILL be made fun-of for correctly enunciating letters and especially the letter "0."
Is this a pleasant place to live over all?
As pleasant as you can get if you LOVE traffic everywhere. Lived there for 2.5 yrs.
As to cars, I picked up my 95 Dakota and I can still take it apart with just hand tools to this day.

Can you split lanes?.... I hate traffic! My commute right now is 23.2 miles and takes me 27 minutes to get there....
Sounds about the same. You just have to figure out different routes from the obvious ones.
There are a lot of great horse farms. Toyota Camry factory is up the highway in Geogetown so lots of industry. State Capitol is west 30 minutes or less.
I like Lexington but I as a yankee the locals prefer I stay in Chicago.
Lexington is a cool town, but I live and grew up in a small town of about 14k, so I'd look into a smaller town closer by like Versailles (locally pronounced ver-sales)
Welcome to the bluegrass, enjoy the humidity.
I used to spend time in for work in both Louisville and Lexington and I liked both towns. I had a co-worker who moved from Cleveland, OH to Richmond and loves it.
I have not been there in a couple of years. I would be interested to see how this highway project is working out.

It's a berkeleying mess. I was through there a few months back....Still under construction. The problem is growth around New Circle Road is, ummmm, stupid. Beaumont Center, which is at the bottom of the pic, is the next greatest place to build to avoid the rest of the people out there. So they came up with that plan to ease the backup congestion on "The Circle" at peak travel times, which is all the berkeleying time.

I moved from Michigan and people barely batted an eye on the "accent". Now over here in BFE-ville, I get questioned all the time.
Wear a University of Louisville shirt or cap your first week there and you'll make lots of new friends.

I was just down there today helping a friend with his Challenge car. Of the three cars on my path (exiting new circle, turning left onto Harrodsburg), one cut a minivan off, to which the minivan replied by laying on the horn for the next two red lights. Not sure which was the biggest moron.
Other than that, I like Lexington, i'd be willing to move there from cincinnati if the right oppurtunity came up. The still salt the roads down there, but nowhere near as much as 100 miles north.
Thanks for the input guys...
So far looks like a pretty darn good place to live, however, it will be known as the town with the "intersection"...great
I did look at the weather trends for the year and while it is warmer than the metro , expected, how humid is it...like wet dish cloth humid... or bring some Gold Bond humid?

I have a BIL that lives there, not bad but the property taxes and income taxes are rediculous.
Nice people, good bourbon, cheap liquor prices...
Coming from living within 30 min of Lake Michigan with 90% humidity up there on a 80F day, Lexington is "dry".

I dunno about cheap liquor, but the bourbon is delightful and plentiful.
Don't forget about stupid city laws that make no sense and people who see fit to let you know about them without telling you about them.
In reply to Ranger50:
I live in Tennessee KY has very cheap liquor prices
In reply to FlightService:
Never paid attention to TN prices. Usually still within a few bucks of each other.

HAHAHAHA.
You better like basketball if you move to Lexington. They bleed blue there.
Go Cats!
Yes, and it's a good time to be a Cats fan right now.
Joe B's: look it up. My wife lived in Lexington before finding me. She loved it.
Oh yeah, Kentucky has a property tax on cars, based on their book value or age(or both), I think. Not great if you like to drive late model cars, but wonderful if you have a fleet of older stuff.

I have to disagree. Even if you don't plate it, you still have to pay yearly tax on it. Complete BS. I spend $200 every damn year for a 97 F250, a 95 Dakota, and one cheap converted landscape trailer. I haven't driven the 250 in 4 years and if I plate it, there is another $50. Very anti-car culture in this state. Oh and every county is different on the taxes levied on your vehicle.

Yeah. Owning a car in KY was a decent amount more expensive then here in AL.
Having grown up in KY, I sometimes miss it but I really don't regret leaving.
