I became an accidental collector when my grandfather passed away.  Evidently, WV used to issue new plates every year with the date stamped into it instead of doing stickers or paper registration.  He had a stack of WV plates dating back to the 40s.

I kept plates from my own rides for years, so I have accumulated probably 40 or 50 plates from WV, OR, CA, PA, TX, and LA.  Neat history.

My preferred display for old license plates is on my Valiant.

I had to look for a while to find year-of-manufacture plates.  Since it's registered as a classic, I had the option of using vintage plates in good condition on it.  Finding a particular state and year usually isn't too hard.  Finding a pair is tougher.

This set required some restoration. If I ever get better at welding really thin steel, I may redo them.

I have PA plates from lots of old cars and trailers. They are leaning on an i-beam in the garage and regularly fall on my head.  I should really do something about that.

When we bought the Farmhouse we found about 100 old Michigan, Ohio and Florida plates dating back to the 1950s. I found a 1958 for the Panhard, a 1956 fir the Cadillac and a. 1967 for the Pontiac all in very presentable shape. The 1956 and 1967 are actually paired plates with a good front and rear!

Sadly I didn't take any photos, but there was a gentleman near here who collected plates--like every state, every year, every variation. Plus all of the specialty plates. And plates from foreign countries. The collection basically lined the walls of his (quite expansive) shop. He's no longer with us and, last I saw, the collection was boxed up. Not sure what happened to it, but I found this page about the sale of his cars.
