When I lived in Jacksonville 88-89, I think I saw every interesting band of the late 80s/early 90s. Amazing some of the shows I saw.

I saw Dinosaur Jr when they opened for The Cure, I think it was the Wish tour in '92. I didn't actually like them all that much. :)
The loudest show I've been to was the Lords of Acid.

I'm glad to have seen the original lineup of Black Sabbath at Ozzfest in 2004 or 2005, which I thought I'd never see. Other legendary bands I've seen include Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, King Diamond, and more. I regret not seeing Rush or Dio, which I will forever kick myself for. I've seen a crap ton of other bands over the years. I've probably seen Killswitch Engage more than all others, and if you have ever seen the Set This World Ablaze concert DVD, I'm in there. I was left of the stage on the outside wall of the giant pit the whole time! My first real concert was the WBCN River Rave in 1996, when I was in 8th grade. WBCN was a big Boston rock radio station, and they used to have this outdoor festival every year filled with great bands. That year had a pretty good lineup on two stages: Everclear, Dishwala (hahaha remember them?), Cracker, Stabbing Westward, The Presidents of the United States of America, and Sonic Youth to name a few. Out of all of them, I vividly remember Everclear and Sonic Youth kicking complete butt. Also, probably of interest to the readers of this thread, a friend of mine that lives in LA somehow got into that recent Guns & Roses show at the Troubador! Long story short... he apparently snuck his way in with a celebrity entourage including Nicholas Cage and Michelle Rodriguez! He's been a huge fan since we were kids, so it was insane that he got to go.
I wish I had seen Rush when I had the chance too.
Slowly I'm getting the concert bug again. Going to see Ghost in May. I thought about Iron Maiden, but tickets are way too expensive.
The loudest concert I ever attended was Smashing Pumpkins at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. The bass player is from South Haven, so the show had kind of a homecoming vibe. It was a long show too. I couldn't hear right for a week after that one.
We'll have to see who else rolls through Michigan this summer.

I bombed the test anyway, and it took me like 20+ years to finally see them. I also skipped Body Count, but it was a friend's birthday so we went to a bar to celebrate so I guess that's a good excuse. Today I have Pylon playing in the office. Pylon, an autocross band? No, not really. They're also from Athens but predate R.E.M. The band has broken up several times over the years. I remember going to at least two of their "last" shows. Randall Bewley, their guitarist, passed away a few years ago, but recently the surviving members have performed as the Pylon Reenactment Society. I need to get up there to see them.
That's funny. My parents disowned me in 1981 after I bombed my first quarter at UGA. Every night there were parties, music, girls, Herschel Walker, etc. to wreck the most studious student. Not necessarily in that order.
I stayed in Athens, and gambled on everything at the Monroe Golf and CC to live without Parental support. Made enough to buy a baby blue Cadillac Eldorado off the showroom floor at Heyward Allen Cadillac in Athens.
Every night the routine was Drewery's beer for 5 dollars a case, Peppermint schnapps shots with the girls, the girls get mad and we leave them for used records at the Wuxtry, then The Odyssey to gamble playing pinball (to pay the rent too) and for $1.00 pitchers of Lowenbrau Dark, or the bar on the river (I for get the name?) had 25 cent Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull (tall boys!), and then off to the B&L Warehouse, Forty watt Club, Brandys Lounge, the Mad Hatter, Pike house, the 5th Quarter, Uptown Lounge, etc. for $2 dollar or no cover for, The B-52's, Love Tractor, REM, The Side Effects, Pylon, Oh-OK, and lotsa wannabes, then the Waffle House, or The Varsity for breakfast and beg the girls for forgiveness. Did a lot of gambling/street racing too with and Olds 442 W30. (I wish I kept that car).
We had an apartment behind the graveyard and I remember getting into a record fight throwing 45's from balcony to balcony. We must have had 50 REM first pressing sample Hib-tone 45's chunked and lost forever. They are worth pretty good money these days. They were freebies/or cheap at the Wuxtry.
I knew if I was ever going to graduate it was off to another school. Too many of the greatest distraction in Athens at the time. Life was good 'til the wheel fell off. Overall, I'm glad I lived through those days.
I was a big Kinks fan an remember seeing them at the Fox one night. The opening acts were Blondie, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

mndsm wrote: I think the weirdest opener i ever saw was thr first time i saw the offspring. There were no openers listed on the stubs, but when we got there, cypress hill (!) Was on the marquee. I thought i was in the wrong place. Get into the venue and mxpx was set up. Muggs about beat the E36 M3 out of some kid that managed to get on stage during cypress hills set. There was sooooooo much marijuana....
That's crazy, and very similar to my favorite concert experience. Buddy and I went to see jurrasic 5. The were CO headlining at red rocks with sound tribe sector nine. We had no idea who sound tribe sector nine was, be we went for j5.
Of course, the sts9 fans showed up and lit up, so we were very confused why so many 60 yo white mj smoking hippies were at a j5 concert. But j5 involved the audience better than any other band I have ever seen, and it was a riot.
Then sts9 came on stage and it started to make sense to us. I went home with an sts9 T-shirt.
Gasoline, great stories. I got to Athens in 1988 and have fond memories of the Uptown Lounge, 40 Watt (the current one and the one before that), Rockfish Palace, The Downstairs, Wuxtry (including the annex up by the dorms) and so many other places. I saw R.E.M. play at the Fox in Atlanta. Pylon opened for them. For a while I DJ'ed the Sounds of the City show at UOG, so that introduced me to even more music.
This part of Athens, Ga. Inside/Out perfectly sums up the day's club scene:
Since the violent femmes were mentioned I have a fun story involving them. In august 2005 I won a car from a local radio station by sitting in it for a week, that Friday the violent femmes were playing a free show at power plant live in baltimore's inner harbor that the station sponsored, which also happened to be where the contest to win the car had been held and wrapped up earlier in the day. I got to hang out with the guys for a few hours, none of them had gotten to Road America other than for a festival, I got to introduce them at the show which was fantastically cool and got me on their tab for the night at the local establishments.
A big Boston classic rock radio station picked up on my buddy's story on sneaking into that G&R show. I think it's gonna go viral.
The concert I've enjoyed the most this year was jack white. That was just an awesome show with such great energy.
I saw pearl Jam at alpine valley in southern wisconsin. So it was a night show in late October and the temperature was probably below freezing by the time they hit the stage. Vetter comes out and says man this is the colder show I've ever done and that we were all crazy. My roommate and I found some nice coeds to keep warm and had a blast.
Another interesting one was motley crue on their dr. Feelgood tour. I was 14 and only my 3rd big concert. They had Tommy Lee setup on a platform that went above the crowd. It was a ton of fun.
Tonight was the Melvins. Wow, killer performance. Plus I love the fact that they're touring with Steve McDonald from OFF!
Not sure who on here recommended ear peace earplugs, but I tip my hat to you.
Last night we went out to the one year anniversary of our friends club. There was a burlesque show and three bands. First band I was using the foam plugs from the bar, then I remembered the ear peace I ordered were in the glove box.
So clear I thought they weren't working for me, but on the drive home I realized my ears weren't ringing at all! Fantastic.
