When you can't make good new movies, release the good old ones.
Realistically, it would be nice if it was a bit more common / acceptable / practical to show movies, from all times, that are good theater movies (LoTR being that of course). I fear we may be entering a time when people don't even realize that theaters are a better place to see some movies.
I'll pay to go see all 3 LoTR re-releases if they agree to burn all copies of everything related to The Hobbit series and never, ever do anything like that again.
It was this series that made me realize- I do not vibe with dragons and magic.
I'm glad it exists for the people that enjoy it. Literature is a thing we need more of. HOWEVER- I am very much like Randall in Clerks II. There is only one Trilogy, and it's not "of the Rings".
In reply to Mndsm :
I love dragons and magic. I will watch The Beastmaster, any time, any where. But Lord of the Rings was a berkeleying chore. I never even bothered to watch the last one, King something something. I was completely disinterested halfway through the second movie.
Took the kids to see "The Two Towers" last night for Father's Day. I thought the cgi held up very well, overall, but Gollum was not as realistic as I remembered. The additional footage helped the storyline a lot but I don't think was absolutely essential. Based on what I've seen of the first two installments at full length, I think Jackson & Co. did a pretty damned good job editing the original release.

Bummer.
