From CL:
"Rare 86 MR2. Built on a Lotus platform, only 5000 were made that year. Many new parts. All tires, timing belt, alternator, complete exhaust, front brakes. Calipers and rotors and a new steering rack. Good gas milage. 150 speedo. 85,00 miles."
The Lotus platform is a myth, and 31,352 were made in 1986...not exactly rare. Rust free, not THAT'S rare!

Grrrrah!!!
Why the Berkeley do people make E36 M3 up all the time?
I walked onto a dealer lot many years ago to look at an Alfetta GT (I think), a Quatrifoglio Edition, with the little four-leaf emblem.
Sales-guy tries to tell me it's because Lotus designed the suspension.
My current peeve is the exaggeration of mpg on CL.
Seems that everything with a 6 cyl is capable of returning 30 mpg and everything with a 4 cyl is capable of 40 mpg.
The previous bragging and exaggeration point used to be 30 mpg on 4 cyl. It seems that has magically jumped to 40 mpg.
curious as to how much they want for that lotus mr2? =]
I'm guessing something like $5k?
oh, I see it now. $2500 isn't too far off the mark for a clean aw11 I guess

The other good one is fuel economy "calculated" using days between fill-ups.

Because they actually believe it, somebody says so it must be true. I know people that actually believe things like that. Of course they aren't gearheads.
at least the lotus thing supposedly has a very small inkling of truth in it? iirc the suspension was designed by a former lotus engineer or some such far-fetched connection to lotus?

Lotus consulted on the chassis. And you could probably convince me that 5000 hardtops were built in that year. Sadly, i don't think either of those rationalizations apply here.

Lotus MR2. The fire makes it easy to find all the rust.

You mean a 1981 240D with 400k miles doesn't get 50mpg and isn't worth $5000?
AW11 with Lotus twincam?
4AGZE in a Elan/Europa/Cortina?
I say: yes.
