The sinkhole has been growing since it emerged from the swamps sometime late on Aug. 2 or early on Aug. 3, 2012, as the suspected result of a salt dome cavern failure deep underground months beforehand.

I was reading an article recently about the increase in sinkholes, ground settling and even minor earthquakes in areas where the underground structure had been mined or drilled to a great degree such as in the oil and gas areas.

They likened it to letting a little air out of a balloon and the surface slightly contracting.
