Yes, kind of.

I know that, from what I have read, Mike is a stand up guy. I am not accusing him of any nefarious wrongdoing. I am saying that ANY time I see a keyed car, a set of wheels stolen or a garage fire my spidey senses go all tingly. They did when the most honest family to bless Facebook had a garage burn to the ground and I knew for a fact they were not culpable. (Joey48442 posted pics a few years back of the Blatchford family barn-b-q).

I hope all goes well and wait for the next Bimmrod to get spat out of the replacement shack.

How much insurance money could there possibly be in that? The car was already salvage once. I'll bet his insurance company hated it. The Ronals may have been worth something, but he could have sold them for probably more than he'd get in a claim payout. Honestly I doubt there's anything fishy going on. Most people aren't willing to just torch their own stuff.

That was a cool car, in a ridiculous sort of way. Call it an art car. Sad to see it go up in smoke.

I know your fire was not intentional, I knew then as well. Mikes Bimmer fire is more than likely not as well, but when I hear about certain events I sometimes need to dig in for myself to see the truth.

Rusty will be miss'd. thats not how I would do a car, but there was alot of effort put in to that car. I wouldn't build a car like the that, but I always thought it was cool

Hmmm, my linky isn't working yet.

But it basically goes back to a thread on Stanceworks from a while back where Mike basically says,

"Eventually, at some point down the road, my rusty e28's life will have to come to an end since it's slowly being eaten.

I'm thinking I yank the motor and then just set the car on fire and film it."

The original thread has been deleted, and is only available cached.

I completely believe it was an accident, I mean no offense by this (and im pretty sure the owner of the car wouldn't argue either) but many peoples brains turn off when it comes to being safe with gasoline.

The car wasnt something I would have built, but i dont mind it. When you realize it was a wrecked car that he fixed and drove until it broke in half, then did that to it, and consider the piles of undamaged ones going to the crusher, if it got to go on and provide a few years more enjoyment then why not? If it had been a 20k mile M5 or something it would be different, but it was something cool built from scrap.

I'm guessing this guy will have an uphill battle with the insurance company if that's true.

There's a difference between 20+ years with a car and 4 though.

Heck yeah. four years pales in comparison. Still, though, I understood every word of what Mike Burroghs was saying, and really resonated with me:

Mike Burroghs wrote: I can say whole-heartedly that this car is 100% responsible for a majority of the friendships I have today. It’s responsible for who I am, what I do, and who I want to be. Sure, to you, it may be “just a car”, but frankly, it’s not.

That reminded me of the line from Love the Beast:

Eric Bana said: This car has been like a camp fire for me and my mates.

...combined with a healthy dose of this

Regardless of what any of us think about hellaflush, though, he WILL rebuild it:

Mike Burroghs wrote: Nay-sayers, “haters”, people who legitimately want to see Rusty come to an end… I’ve got some bad news. This certainly won’t be your winning battle. He’ll be back…. and if you know Rusty like I do, you know there’s a lot more than just steel that makes him. It’ll take more than Satan’s hand to end his days. So it’s time to dust off the ashes and start cutting, we’ve got berkeleying work to do.

I don't care if he rebuilds it or not, it's his car and whatever floats his boat his cool with me. All the existential poseur crap about being connected to it is pretty lame though. You want connection? My Grandfather bought an AMX new in 68 and owned until 2010. That's 42 years of driving, racing, and winning with it. That was a connection. My neighbor had (he died) a 1962 Thunderbird that he bought new. He still had it over 50 years later. He courted his wife and delivered his son in that car. THAT'S a connection.

Four years doesn't even cover the payments on a new one, and it sure as heck doesn't qualify it for an epic soul-stirring dirge. Just build the damn car and stop yapping about it.

I am inclined to disagree. it isn't just TIME that builds a connection with a car, it's experiences. I would venture that someone can gain a bigger connection with a car that they have raced for only one season than one they have driven on the street for 10 years.

In a similar situation, Mike is KNOWN for rusty, he has gained followers and a community has gathered around this guy and his car. Hellaflush and Stanceworks have only been around for a few years, and Mike has been the figurehead for the movement.
