This is the real reason. Not because it's short for "graphic".
Girl
Gift
Get
Geese
Giddy
Gig
Giggle
Really what matters is if you treat it as a word of native English (or Germanic family) origin, or if you treat it as derived from Greek or Romance languages.

Thanks. I shared it with Mrs. VCH, and she now thinks I have a brother from another mother.

I want a grooving area!
Pfff, a grooving area is just a conversation pit with shag carpeting and some lube.

My LOL for this morning: Duke's examples can be (mis)-pronounced as "yiff", "hurl", and "ho".
Bloody hell, "JPEG Interchange Format" IS real, I assumed it was a joke. I had never looked up JFIF before.
My parents 1970 built home had a sunken living room - it was a big deal at the time. It also cut 8" into the basement ceiling height.
The neighbors had the sunken pit in front of the fireplace and the next owner filled it in with concrete - it was a waste of space.

At least three of those traditional architecture examples are churches. It wasn't about celebrating the nation or the civilization, it was about taking 10% of people's earnings to build monuments to religion.

The other 4th one was a King who blew through his country's money to recreate a personal dream of a medieval castle playground in the 1860s and they killed him for it.
