Curious about products you guys might use, specifically for beards.
This past No-shave-ember rendered a beard that for the first time has become permanent. In the past, my 30 day old facial growth was allowed to go wild because that was the point. Much like a DSM crank under boost, or a Protege gearbox in a stiff wind, my beard was only destined for a short life, and so zero berks were given. But now, I'm keeping it groomed, trimimg about once a week, so I can wear my beard in a business setting.
That said, despite being kept pretty short, it is growing wild and crazy and I cannot get it to behave. I've heard about beard products that help keep the hairs a bit more in check.
Do you guys have a recommendation? Should I leave it natural, and forgo the hipster beard goop? Should I just let it grow out duck dynasty style? Should I use the can of 30 year old 90 weight in my garage? What says the hive?
I wax my mustache. But, the beard I just wash and use conditioner when I wash my hair. There are beard oils that are supposed to help keep it under control, that is all I know.
I've had a beard since 1969 ... all I do is shampoo it .. sometimes no shampoo, then I just use soap ... I use a brush to work it and that's about all
yup. shampoo and bristle brush for me. get it trimmed when I go to the barber shop.
Hmmm...I have been trying to put some leave in conditioner in it, but it seems to just coat it with a film, perhaps give it a slightly softer feel, not actually help with the craziness or keeping it from looking wild.
What kind of wax Kia-racer? Ive heard of people using coconut oil (the food kind, also used a lot in lotions and whatnot). I gave that a try, and it didnt do much to help either. Perhaps my beard is just too coarse?

I keep mine around a #4 with a wahl trimmer and I brush it, nothing else. I've been doing that for 11 years.
I keep mine at a #3, so we are in the same boat. Sounds like time will heal all. Probably just need to "train" my beard, much like a new haircut. Thanks guys
I can't help much, mine is staying VERY short. About like what Brian said.

Clubman - I get mine at Sally's Beauty Supply. It works well, it is very thick. I just warm it up between my finger and thumb and apply. My stach is about 2" long so if I don't wax it I chew on it when I eat.
Yep I found it easier to keep a short beard than mess with grooming one daily. Plus my wife didn't like when it got too long. And if mama ain't happy....
My beard isn't hipster length, but it's long enough in needs something to keep it in check. Especially the gray parts.
I've had great luck with the products from canyouhandlebar.com. I've used their stache wax for the "Rollie Fingers" when I had one, and still use their beard oil. They also sell a small fine toothed comb that works great.
I forgot too- the products are made and sold by Michiganders out of Michigan ingredients which is cool.

Excellent - thats the kind of endorsement I was looking for...OFF TOO TEH GOOGELZ
I just wash mine with shampoo. Im not full caveman anymore but its still about 6 inches long.
I use "Honest Amish Beard Balm" to keep the itch down, but that's it.
Good deal!
I wasn't sure what I needed right off, so I sent the owner an email. He's super cool! We exchanged emails for about a week.

I don't really have any expertise on this subject. My week old facial hair looks like someone's five o clock shadow..
Reading with interest, now checking 'CanYouHandleBar' and 'Honest Amish Beard Balm'. My beards not long, shorter than it was 20 years ago.
How about a show you beard addition to the thread.
Me last weekend with my girls.

I use this oil of Argon crap. It seems to help a bit with taming it.
My 'burns are au naturel.

'nother vote for honest amish. I use the beard balm and it keeps things in check better than natural. Mostly I think because its a bit more compliant when its conditioned. I use their beard wax for those occasions when I need it to be really under control but balm only works fine for most things.
Adrian, I keep mine about as long as you have yours, the beard balm is great for it.

Nivea gel and Gilette Fusion blades.
(have huge baldspot on my back, need to stay clean-shaven to keep from falling over)

Hah. My 5 o'clock shadow looks like a day's growth for some people.
It also doesn't look much different after two days. So I let it go on weekends where I don't have to not look like a hobo. Gives the skin time to recuperate.
So, I normally hate talking about my beard because I like having it, but it becomes a talking point to any one walking by with a smaller beard. Just so many stupid comments.
But hey, this is the GRM forum so I'm happy to help like-minded car guys. Plus David specifically sent me a link to this to check out.
I have a few things I use on my beard, but it all depends on what you're trying to achieve. If you're trying to make it grow in length then you need to trim it whenever you get your hair cut. You can trim it yourself or find yourself a legit barber...I recommend barber.
I shampoo and condition each shower. At my length I use shampoos that moisturize and conditioners with keratin to keep it straight, or as straight as possible. I blow dry it after so its not all frizzy.
Products wise I use "Spiffy Stuff". http://shop.mensspiffystuff.com/main.sc I use their oils and their balms. Both work very well and smell better than other brands I've used that try to make you feel like you just finished going down on a pine tree. The oils keep the beard soft and shiny. The balm will add some weight and keep it straight. Use one or the other, don't mix.
And to answer the normal questions, it takes me about a year to grow this and I've had it for over 8yrs now.
