I'm surprised we hadn't accomplished this goal earlier.
Also, am I the only one who now wants to exercise? It's like when I see that show hoarders and immediately get up and start cleaning the house.
"Lift Assist" is one of the most common reasons for a call to 911. Several times per day, every day, the fire truck goes out to pick someone up off the floor who can't get up on their own. The dispatchers know that some addresses require two trucks (six firefighters) on every lift assist.

Most people / most overweight situations are caused by the food taken in and not activity levels. That said I've been planning on taking some time and money this weekend and shopping for good running shoes.

Not at all...I started working out before work 3 or 4 days a week after A). I started to have to buy a larger pant size, and B). the doc said my cholesterol was worrying her, and Im not even 35 yet. Im not down a whole lot - maybe 10 lbs, but I feel waaaay better, and hopefully the cholesterol is down (though I havent had my blood drawn yet, and I have also been taking a cholesterol med everyday for the last 6 mos too). I used to get terrible indigestion and had no energy, among other things, which the doc said may have been from weight gain. Both of those symptoms are better, and the big pants I bought are now too big...score.
I ride the bike in a trainer for about 15 min, then a fairly high pace light lifting/calisthenics routine for another 15, and Im good to go. I also eat a ton of fiber (for the cholesterol). I dont plan on being a statistic, but at 6'1" and 243.8 lbs (as of this morning), Im still technically obese on some scales:

my BMI = 32.2

I definitely dont look obese - most people when hearing my weight think Im kidding - I dont look at all like I should weigh nearly 250. I think part of the "obesity epidemic" while legitimate, because there are a TON of fatties out there, is also a bit misleading by using a scale like BMI that really is a bit unrealistic.
The BMI index isn't a great way to determine healthy weight. For instance, it doesn't differentiate between male and female. At 5'10", 130 lbs is the low end of healthy and 170 is the high end. I can't imagine what I'd look like at 130 lbs, but that's considered a "healthy" weight.
Bmi is a best a horrible determination of health. At my height I should be 180-185lbs on the high end. Last time I was 185 I was damn near single digit body fat percentage.

Amen! Not that I'm as lean as I could be, but the only way my 6'1" is getting down to 185 is by losing a limb. I could get down to 220-230 range but then I start packing on more muscle. BMI doesn't account for things like that.

Well, I would argue that it's both - too low activity level resulting in a low resting metabolism coupled with a high food intake rate. You can eat more if you are more active and maintain or even lose weight. But yes, most people need to cut their food intake!
Exactly. I'm 37, and never exercise- but I do go home every night and work on the house, in the yard, or on a car. Watch an average of 5 hours of TV per week. The key for me is to always be doing something. It keeps your metabolism up. I eat like a teenager still- probably 2500 to 3000 calories per day, and I'm 5'10" and 185 pounds. Last night I dug footer holes by hand for the new deck I'm building. Blisters heal.
I've always hated exercise. I go out for a walk at lunch time, which I do enjoy, but when I walk past a construction crew doing hard manual labor I think, "Man, here I am wasting all this energy walking, and they're putting it to productive use." Guess that's just the engineer in me. Maybe I should volunteer for construction work in my lunch hour.
2500-3000 isn't teenager like eating, though. It's about what an average 185lb male who is somewhat active would need to sustain weight. I'm 170lbs at 5'9" and eat 3000-3200 per day. I'm a gym rat, both weightlifting and running, but have a desk job. At 2500 per day, I lose weight. People run into trouble when they eat 4000+ per day. And it's easy to do if you aren't thinking about what you're doing and just keep eating. I on occassion allow a day, or weekend, where I probably go to 4000...I don't measure those so I don't know the exact number and frankly don't give a E36 M3...but it's a rare treat.
BMI is an poor indicator for health. Rich Froning, the fittest man on earth 4 times over as the Crossfit Games Champion, posted on his blog that he had to pay more for health insurance due to his BMI number. BMI does not take into count body fat %. If you have muscles, you are going to be high on BMI.
2 years ago I had to take a 'wellness check' for health insurance through the Mrs Hospital. They have everyone line up and do a bunch of tests. At the end while getting my evaluation, the lady told me my BMI was 29% and I need to loose some weight. I do an hour of crossfit every morning and hit the regular gym pretty regularly. I have a Body fat of 15% and a decent six pack, but still almost considered morbidly obese. 5'10 - 205lbs.
Lol if I were to get down to 180 I'd look anorexic. Either that or I'd never make it that low because I'd start packing on muscle.
I am also in that 6'1"-6'2" range and am currently around 215. I think that optimal weight for me is about 195. I am a fairly small framed guy for my height though. I am trying to get down to 195 right now but haven't been that skinny since middle school (yep). BMI would still put me at 25% which is crazy.
