Our 9-3 convertible has been down for a while due to a bad ECU.  Ordered a rebuilt one and it came just in time for the coldest part of the winter so far.  I ended up taking a mental health day yesterday with the intention of getting the car up and running.  Swapped the computer, crank no start.  Put the old one back in starts right up.  Say a few choice words, the part was not cheap, but decide to reflash the new one and see what happens.  Get it all done and the car is running great so I run to get gas and swing by my wife's work.  Pull into the parking lot at the school and all of a sudden steam is rolling out from the hood.  Popped the hood and coolant is boiling out of the overflow, oh great.  I hope its a stuck thermostat or something else simple and not a HG.

This is definitely a not my monkey, not my circus situation but my sister-in-law is going through a tough patch right now.  Among other things, she wasn't going to be able to afford her apartment any more so she didn't renew her lease which was up at the beginning of this month.  She and her kids planned to move out of their apartment and then move in with a friend for a couple months until she can get a new place to live.  I offered to hook up the trailer, drive the couple of hours to their town, and help her move.  Had the days marked off on my calendar at work and everything.  She said she had it covered and not to worry about it.  No problem, if you change your mind let me know, happy to help, family's important, least I can do to support you, and all that jazz.  Earlier this week we were told that they had all moved to her friend's house and things were settling in.  Great.

My wife finds out today that they're now being officially evicted.  On the last day of their lease, they gathered their clothes and a few things and headed over to her friend's house.  Left all their stuff there, bedbugs included (yikes), and a complete mess.  She's all hacked off at this eviction thing because they "last slept there" the day before the lease ended.  I mean, she completely doesn't understand why the apartment complex isn't okay with them using the place as storage past their lease date.  I might get it if this was some young kid moving out of the first place they ever had on their own but this is a 50 year old college-educated woman who has been living on her own for decades now.

I was always taught, if there is anybody in your field of view, turn them off. Even if they are two miles up the road.

Around here there aren't really any roads that are straight enough to see that far ahead, so turning off your brights if you can see another car is also how I was taught!  I did greatly enjoy driving the Neon around with the giant LED lightbar, though.  If I was 100% certain that the oncoming car had their brights on, I'd just flip the switch on that bad boy and let them know what brights really were.

You've inspired a rant.

I'd pay to go back to ye good olden days of JC whitney with silver plastic lining each door frame, fake exhaust tips on pretend sport compact cars, and endless stickers if it meant we could skip over the "I bought this lightbar on Amazon/Bangood/Temu and I am going to aim it directly at your face" era. It's the same guy, but this little stylized temper tantrum of an outlet is more dangerous.

I might owe a 25% apology to Toyota owners...  I had a 2023 Camry as a rental and it was equipped with automatic brights.  Now, I've had a couple Mercedes loaners with those and they worked really well with my only complaint being that they were a little too quick to think that objects down the road were other cars and would turn off the brights when it shouldn't have.  The ones in the Toyota, however, seemed to delight in turning on especially when there was oncoming traffic as though their job was nothing more than to blind other drivers.  So those of you that have Toyotas that I've cursed for not turning your damned brights off, if you were depending on the automatic brights you get a 25% apology.  You're still 75% at fault for not realizing what was going on and turning those things off.  But I'm a little bit sorry I cursed your children and made assumptions about your relationship with your mother.

You see, that's just the kind of company Toyota is. They know what douchebags their owners are and how much they would delight in doing that to other drivers on the road up to, and including other Toyota drivers. I believe they also have a similar Toyota adaptive cruise control that, when it senses a car behind it automatically slows  down to 10 km/hr below the speed limit, even slower when it senses heavy traffic in the other direction such that you can't pass.

Dead battery in the excursion. berkeley it, jumped it, went grocery shopping anyway. Get there, no cards on me, $5 in my pocket. berkeley. Go to leave, guess what? Dead battery. 15 minutes and 10 people before I got a jump from an old dude with a V10 Ford Street Van.

A handful of people that served in Washington's cabinet asked "Why don't you just call AAA?"

Why don't you just pop your hood shiny happy person, I can be gone in under a minute.

Just before Christmas I ran the battery down on my car using the hazards longer than anticipated. No problem there's a store across the road, I'll ask somebody for a boost, I always carry cables. First guy, in a totally nothing special accord. Sorry, thumbing his nose at me, I don't boost with my car.

Parents fried an alternator boosting someone else's car (yes the cables were hooked up properly), so were a bit gunshy about giving someone else a jump.  I've kind of inherited that attitude.

I believe that I read in the FSM for the Saab that they don't recommend jump starting it or connecting a battery charger while the battery is connected to the car because of the possibility that it can spike the ECU.

The WHOLE POINT of a Bob-damned cough drop is that you suck on them for a while so that they can soothe your throat.

If you put them in your mouth and immediately crunch them away, they do almost nothing to help you.

AND IT JUST PISSES OFF YOUR COWORKER WORSE THAN HE ALREADY WAS BY YOUR INCESSANT COUGHING.

I mean, I have sympathy that you're sick, and I realize that as boss you feel you need to be here.  But how about doing both of us a favor?

I just found a new artist I really like. I bought his latest album on Saturday and made sure I had him followed on Songkick so I'd see if he did a show in Chicago. I almost commented when I made the purchase Saturday morning (Bandcamp lets you do this when you buy music) that I would love it if he had a show in Chicago.

I just found his Facebook. His last several posts are him doing last minute promoting of a show he did Sunday in Chicago. Tickets were $20 and I had nothing else going on.

I really like having the small jump packs in all our vehicles so I don't have to worry about this. As a bonus, they're easy to get into junkyards to be able to power up a car (specifically, a BMW) enough to be able to move the power seats enough to get to all of the bolts...

Spent about 6 hours last night at the ER with The Dancer. She's been having some really severe pain on her back/side that has ramped up such that she hadn't really slept this week and it was finally bad enough for her to concede going to the hospital.

The good: the combination of things they gave her while there helped considerably with the pain and she actually slept reasonably well last night.

The bad: Despite employing 2 of the 3 methods of imaging and what looks to be a pretty comprehensive panel of blood tests they had no real idea of what the problem might be and effectively punted by saying that she should get in at an Ortho specialist and likely have them do an MRI to see if they can figure out what the problem is. It's really frustrating (but not new, we've literally been through this exact situation before- which was later 'resolved' when she had to have her gall bladder removed in quite a hurry) to have spent that much time (and, eventually, money) and come away with essentially no answers- not even a lot of things that they've fully ruled out. I hate seeing her in this much pain and not being able to do anything about it.

It also pisses me off a fair bit because there wasn't any really good option besides going to the ER and eating whatever premium it cost to go there because the option was to have to wait weeks at a minimum to get in to her primary doctor (who essentially brushed off our concerns when it turned out to be an inflamed gall bladder that needed to come out ASAP), convince them to make a referral to either a specialist or to have the scans done, wait for an appointment to get the scans, wait however long they want to take to read the scans, and so on and so forth. Her sister (a nurse) said that it wouldn't be surprising for it to take like 2 months to get through the things that the ER would likely do pretty much right away if we got a doctor/PA who took things seriously (which we thankfully did).

Just had this issue earlier this week.  My jump pack was in my daughter's car, my jump box was at home and my wife couldn't leave work to bring me the jump pack out of her car... angry  At least the roadside rescue guy was nice, once he found me.  All because I left my lights on, so I couldn't even be mad with anyone but myself blush

You sound so bad, I am compelled to wash my hands after talking to you on the phone. Stay Home.

You described your condition yesterday as, "almost hallucinating." STAY HOME!

I do not care that there is an event here. You don't need to go to it. However bad we might look not having a manager on sight, we'll look WORSE if that manager is disgustingly sick.

Call the owner. They can fill in for you. If the owner doesn't want to show up to cover for you, that's on him. It's his company, not your's.

STAY THE berkeley HOME!!!
