My daughter is 14 and has flown the drone a few times. Usually in a large open field because we were all still learning how to fly it. Last night we decided to check out the fall colors since they are just starting to change. She saw a train and went to check it out.

Anyway, I think for having less then 20 mins flight time under her belt, she did pretty well.

Very cool. It's amazing how difficult and mind blowing a video like that would have been to make 10 years ago. And now, the tools to make it are common place.

Nice!  I have the same drone (in reality my son's, who is 15).  He's taken it aboard our boat and shot some cool video on the James River.  The Phantom 3 is amazing, and easy to fly.  Incredible the technology jammed into that thing.

Bravo to your young pilot!  Major bonus points for filming the train.

That is honestly better than my first drone video found here.

Taken with a “try it before you buy it” Spark.

I'll pass along your kudos, thanks.  It is amazingly easy to fly. I had a Phantom 1, and upgraded to the 3 for the extra fail-safes it has. I wanted the kids to fly it. They all love it.

I like the hug at the end.  Nice!  Did you buy it?

No, I still have it though.  This whole arrangement came about from a friend that landed a similar Spark in the ocean.

I replaced his motors and then modded some of his Mavic batteries to take an external LiPo for increased flight time.  My payment is the use of his Spark.

Very cool. Can you mod some phantom batteries the same way?

What's the range of control on those?

That's cool. I know absolutely nothing about photography videography or drones. Just curious. Do you view a monitor on the ground it shows you what you're filming?

15-16 years ago, I helped a photographer design and build a RC helium balloon for aerial photography. When it was all said and done, buying the blimp, a enclosed trailer to haul it in, the RC gear to control the camera, the wireless video capability, and the camera equipment, I bet he had well over $15000 in it.

It is amazing that you can have that capability with a sub $1000 drone that fits in a suitcase.

The Phantom 3, and many others I'm sure, actually broadcasts a wifi signal that can be picked up by say, an iPad, which makes a dandy display.   That way, you can see what the camera is seeing as it records to an SD card.  It also has GPS and a host of other features I can't be bothered to learn.  It knows wherefrom it took off, and can automatically return to that point and land under autopilot.  Remarkable.  My son is far more knowledgeable about it than I am.

I’m sure it can be done on a phantom but I haven’t personally (yet).

Let me do a little research this weekend.  Generally speaking the battery pack can be modified, or the bird can be modified.  I’ve only done battery packs so far.

The Phantom 3 has, under perfect conditions, about a 2-mile range. But realistically, trees and buildings can cut that down to 1-4 mile pretty quick.

Here's a video I shot in Netherlands. Because of the gargantuan 650 year old church I was behind, I lost all radio control. About 1/2 way through the (short) video I lose radio signal. It gets a little wonky because I have control very sporadically and I'm unknowingly fighting the drone. Then I set the controller down and wait for the safety features to kick in. You'll see the drone pivot to face home and pause while it looks for a signal.  It doesn't find one, then it heads home. I stop the recording as it gets ready to land.

AMAZING!
