We're underpowered. I'm damn accurate with my weapon, but underpowered. 
The locals are known to carry full autos and I've almost been hit by 9mm fire. They weren't shooting at me. We've seen people shot with AKs and a range of handguns. I almost drew on a kid with a toy gun with no flare orange, like it should have had. I don't work the late hours anymore, so its pretty quiet while I'm at work now. I still hear gunshots from time to time.

Nah then I would have to be wearing black cargos, Oakleys, wouldnt have first aid cause when you are tacticool you never get hurt and you would know I had all that crap on me because I would be wearing big bulky holsters and wouldn't care (open carry is legal here). 99.9% of the time you would never know I had that on me. The thing that stands out most is the RAT wallet especially when I keep the cell in it but it is very similar to size of a point and shoot camera case and heck I have even used it for that before.

If we're going to play that game, how are inanimate objects going to help you deal with situations that you're afraid of?
It's how you use those inanimate objects. They don't create anything without user input.
Just because someone makes the choice to no longer be a victim does not mean that they are "afraid". Anyone ever hear of a little cult calld the Boy Scouts? Their motto "Always be prepared"? It's something a lot of us try to do with out every day lives.
My EDC:
-Leatherman multi tool
-spare boot laces
-bandages
-phone
-nail clippers (Don't run a mill without them!)
-Toothbrush, toothpaste and mouth wash
-swiss army knife
-mini-mag flashlight
-my trusty mouth guard
Illinois = no concealed carry for me.
I also have a tool box stowed in the Scoob with enough tools to mostly dismantle a first gen Impreza; Flat and Phillips screw drivers and a small contingent of metric sockets and wrenches (Read as 10, 12 and 14mm with a few others tossed in.). Most of the space in the box is occupied by engine hoses, belts, fuses, a coil pack and an alternator. Of course I also carry a 4-way, wheel chocks and a full size spare...am I paranoid?

Let me guess, you think full auto is illegal to have? Much to learn this one does. They're pretty easy to buy pending your local laws, the the waiting period for the tax stamp isn't too long, but the biggest slowdown factor is the cost of a transferrable full auto weapon or sear kit.....(thank the mid 80's for that one)
Mac's are about the cheapest at $2-4k, AC556's and M2 carbines are around $5-7k, M16's are $12-18k, Thompsons are $15-35k, and god help you if you want a real BAR....those run $45k+

Nah just very prepared. My truck has a tool kit, ax, shovel, fire extinguisher, more duct tape, more para cord, tow chains, snow chains, flash lights, couple blankets, water, energy bars, another first aid kit, rifle, full sized spare of course, gas can, tent, sleeping bag, fishing gear and a few other things I can't think of off the top of my head.

My best weapon is situational awareness. If you never get into that situation, you don't have to fight your way out of it.
BUT.... you don't always get to pick the location etc and having a backup is a good thing.

A gun can help you out in a certain type of situation just the same way that any other tool can help you out in its specific kind of situation.
Ever try to change a flat tire on the side of the road without a jack, or a wrench? That's a situation I am afraid of, that the proper tool helps me deal with quickly and effectively.

Indeed. For some strange reason I seem to be drawn to haggard cars.
I've CC less times than I have fingers. Mostly when we go up north to the cabin. I have a Taurus PT-1911 AR .45ACP. I've been considering a smaller pistol, but I don't know yet...
RE Alex: Is that a vintage Fender amp or a reissue?
There was a 1903 that came into my local shop not long ago and it sold in 10 minutes, about 5 minutes before I got there . I believe that one was a .32 as well.

shop here in town has an original thompson, with a case, a couple stick mags and a drum, with full ownership history. listed at 45k.
