I actually cried a little with the first coat. You take a completely unknown tree to a mill and ask a Derek to open it up and make something with it... without knowing anything about what's inside. It's actually not at all what I expected. I expected far more boring white maple. He mentioned that he has ordered curly maple blocks before, and he got less curl out of them that I got out of this random couple of trees.
Phase 7. (7? I lost count) is next. Chimney, skin the fireplace, then stone the fireplace.
Jesus that floor looks wonderful Curtis!

Also, found and purchased the couch and chair. It's not quite the English Gentleman's Club style, but everything else about it was perfect and the price was right. I might call it Victorian Cottage style.
Did it come with a Tweed jacket and pipe? Will you call me 'old chap' whilst discussing the innumerable benefits of the Quadrajet, Lord Baron Curtis ?
Curtis and The Dereks Home Renovation has a nice ring to it. Those floors are killer!

The floor is amazing. And the fact that the floor of your house was grown right next to the damn house is just mind blowing.
Kudos to you, not only for the beautiful work you've done, but also for the wisdom and foresight to even think of turning those trees into that floor.

The floors are indeed beautiful. Do you have any fear that they will yellow with time, or is that just what you expect? When we built our house we went with natural maple cabinets. They are gorgeous with tons of curl, but have yellowed over the years.

I know the finish won't yellow. Can't really predict what the maple will do.
I have seen a lot of maple get yellow with age and always assumed it was the finish... but maybe it's the wood itself.
Edit: I did notice when I took the bands off the pallet, the wood was whiter under the straps, but the exposed wood didn't yellow, if anything it got a little reddish.
