Wow!
We're hoping she stays that colour! We're working on names right now - all of the foals in this breeding program will have the "Balsam Valley" designation in front, so "BV" + whatever we come up with.
We've tossed about some names: Iridescent, Sunwashed, Cornsilk, Buttercream, Platinum Blonde, Gilded Lily...
Thanks for the pics! Made my day
No name suggestions here - other than noticing Buttercream but not Buttercup. Not suggesting, just noticing.
The mom is a race horse. We have something called the "Canadian Sport Horse" up here. Basically, almost any breed can qualify, as long as they pass an inspection and score highly with athletic attributes and correct conformation. My horse passed with flying colours - so, when bred to a CSH registered stallion, the baby is automatically a CSH. Easier to market them as competition horses. Two good friends of mine who are involved in the association decided to form an off-shoot of "Canadian Sport Ponies" using approved and high quality bloodlines. The progeny will be ponies or small horses of very high quality for showing. We formed a partnership in the breeding of my mare - since she is so very nice but I didn't have the time or the extra money needed. My friends are really knowledgeable, they did the research and chose the stallion, which is a very fancy imported Welsh pony. The baby will eventually be sold.
Congratulations, Lesley! More horsepower is always good.
Regarding names: if the colour in the first picture is accurate, can I suggest "Maple Sugar"? Hard to get more Canadian than that.

Given her colouring, and sticking to the Canadian theme, Double-Double?
Forgot to add.....of your given color names, I like "buttercream." The foal is not light enough to use "cornsilk" or "irridescent," and when I hear "blond" I think of palomino.
My sis is a large animal vet in PA. From a non horse person , I could have sworn she sent me the exact same pics on Monday. I had to go back and look, here's were of a colt who is a little darker.
Congrats.
She's really the epitome of nervous new momma - equal parts proud and freaked out. It is soooo cute. thanks all

I'm with the folks that are continually astonished at how quick a foal finds its feet and learns to run. I suppose that's a pretty good adaptation for an animal that started off in the "prey" category! I often wonder how many thousands of years prehistoric humans wasted hunting the damn things for food before they realized perhaps they should "make friends" with an animal that fast & strong.
