Woke up top a rather annoying grunting noise this morning. Checked by the AC, where the chickens hang out, and nothing. Went down to the carport and one of the Rhode Island Reds was really yelling at one of the roosters. Look around a little bit and there it was, my first egg! Except for some reason, a rooster is sitting on it. I think he's confused.

Maybe he laid it, which would explain all the grunting.

Semi-relevant to thread.  Met my neighbor's ducks the other week.  They were hatched over the winter.  OMG the male is HUGE.  Like, I couldn't think that a flying bird could get that big.

Yes. Had one scare the E36 M3 out of me in the carport this spring. It jumped onto the roof then flew of the top, sounded like I was getting shot at.

Maybe I'm wrong about the rooster, and now I feel bad for scaring it off the egg. The only chickens I have that don't lay brown eggs are the ones I thought were boys.

I thought we weren't allowed to post pictures of hot chicks on here anymore.

Or talking about sexing chicks.

their preferred laying spot. That 4x4 is where my power comes into the shop.

You do know about the Egg Song thing right?  Many chickens will make quite a racket just after laying.  It really makes no sense though that they draw attention to a fresh egg so that predators can gather.

Do you have a coop / egg boxes?  If not, you may literally end up with your own Easter egg hunt every day.

BTW egg boxes are not a full fix to all laying issues.  They tend to get favorite boxes, and when two want to lay at the same time it can turn into a yelling match.

Do have the big coop setup, but they haven't been in it in a month. I think it's too hot at night.

Did finally get a nesting box built. I was originally going to put it on the side on the coop, but for now, it's in the carport where they've been laying. I threw some golf balls in it to gleefully give them the right idea.

The golf balls help with their long game as well.

Unfortunately, we have a healthy fox population this year for the first time since we purchased the property.  So, we have no more chickens.  The foxes were grabbing them in the afternoon (we lock the chickens up at night).  We were even nearby when they picked a few of them off.

3.5 weeks from first laying, and I'm averaging 4 eggs a day now. Some days 5, some days 3.

The green eggers are consistent daily, at least one of the barred rocks is every day, and I'm guessing the RIR are doing the work. Could be wrong, but the Brahma still aren't laying yet, and they're the only ones left.

When do you get an 8 piece and a biscuit?
