Luckily, on Saturday the guy at the liquor store noticed that mine will be expiring soon. Last time I didn't realize until I went into a bar, got carded, and the guy said "You know this expired 6 months ago, right?". Uh, no. Whoops.
By "they" you mean "Indiana," right? I've never seen another state so hell bent on NOT sending notices of any kind, for anything.
About ten years ago I got my license suspended for a "Failure to Appear" violation. Turns out in Indiana if you get two speeding tickets a year you are automatically required to attend a defensive driving class. Never got the notice and didn't find out until a job I was at were going to put me on the company insurance. After the MVR check came back my boss came up to me and asked if I realized I had a suspended license. Uh, no. Only thing I ever recieve from the BMV is the annual notice to renew my plates. Though since now you can only renew plates online I figure that's going to stop. I still do get notices from which ever state agency is responsible for CDL's every two year informing me that my physical is about to expire.

Several years ago I signed up for defensive driving so a speeding ticket wouldn't go on my record. I was told that I would receive a letter in the mail notifying me of the time, date, and location of the class. One Friday I get home from work and check the mail. There's a letter from the DMV, telling me that I have to be at DD at 8am THE NEXT FREAKIN' DAY in a neighboring suburb town 45 minutes away. At least I didn't have to work, but I did have a birthday party to attend that night and plans the next day. Needless to say, I was quite hung over and sleep deprived, and didn't learn much in class.

Okay, tracked down the issuing body, which fortunately was a CHP office nearby. Officer told me to come in so we could get everything taken care of. I said I was a bit nervous about driving there on a suspended license.

"You've been driving all this time on a suspended license though."

"Yeah, but I haven't driven down to a police station where they knew I was showing up with a suspended license."

"Just ask for Officer [Me]."

So he gets out the case file. Takes a quick look. "The DMV screwed up. This isn't your license number. It's one number different." Turned out the DMV punched in a "1" that should have been a "6". So he's going to contact them to start sorting things out and give me a call back to let me know what, if anything, I need to do.

So: Obvious error. No mug shots, finger prints, or identity theft. Could be a lot worse, but still isn't 100% fixed yet.

Just because I tend to be extra cautious about this stuff I would have had a friend drive me to the station, you never know Farva (or Barney Fife depending on your generation) could have been working. Glad you got it sorted out.

It had been dead since March... Not as bad as when let insurance lapse on 2 parked, mostly disassembled motorcycles for several months. That was several sets of Hoosiers worth of MVA inflicted pain.

I had a state trooper come and take my tags because of no insurance. The truck was on blocks with most everything not in it. Ended up costing me 3k in fees. That $7 a day adds up.....
