Ignoring the fact that it's on antique plates for a moment (WV Antique plates allow for "pleasure" use from mid-day Friday to mid-day Monday), it's simply a matter of time, not so much money.
The trip has to happen on a specific day, and given the amount of outsourced work still needed, it's not going to be ready in any sane fashion. I'm not planning to make this one of the "wrenching until 3am the night before" type trips, I have enough stress in my life already.
For example, I'm currently waiting for the upholsterer to be able to fit me in to fix the wolverine spec seats, the roof needs work and it needs a bunch of other work, some of which has to be done by other people.
Oh, and a nice X1/9 these days is most definitely on the other side of 10k, at least for my definition of nice.

Given how bidding has exploded on this car, I suspect it'll be out of my budget by tomorrow.
But dang, it's a cool car.
It's probably a bit hardcore for what you have in mind but my 1993 could be for sale. Located in Lexington, rust free, 2005 VVT motor, 6 speed, 3.6 diff, MS3/turbo/etc. mod list is longer than the average hootus but the end result is a track capable car that retains AC and PS.
Unfortunately the previous owner removed the factory seat belts when installing the Hard Dog double diamond roll bar so it uses Sabelt 6 point harnesses and race seats so it's.....snug.

I think we chatted about this car on FB a week or two ago when I mentioned in passing that I was looking for a Miata in the Enablers group.
And yes, you are unfortunately correct - this would be a great car if I was looking for a track-ish car, but too hardcore for what I'm looking for right now.
Not that bought anything yet, but I may have sent someone a deposit and spent some time communing with the Flyin' Miata catalog...

Let's just say that the car (IMHO) wasn't worth the 10h round trip. As pretty much everybody on this forum probably knows, my E36 M3box detector isn't exactly the most sensitive, and it was going off big time as soon as I put eyes on the car. Not that it wouldn't have made a good base for a project, but the asking price was definitely out of project Miata range for me even with the current price levels. Not worth it to me for the price.
OTOH I can now say that I've been to Trenton NJ.
So you haven't grab up a Miata yet?? I also noticed that you are interested in purchasing some FM products for a Miata. Not looking to do a fly and drive?

No Miata yet, and not interested in a fly'n'drive for one either, mainly due to time constraints. The one in NJ was further than I wanted to go in the first place, but it was a pretty rare model that potentially had, err, potential. Which it had in spades, just not the sort of potential I was looking for.
I've owned a bunch of NAs so by now I have basically a mod list that I work my way through when I get one, and oddly enough FM supplies most of these items. I was checking what was available as a few are out of stock right now.

Well, guess who was in a meeting when the auction ended and forgot to set himself a reminder?
So far the X1/9 shopping story seems to be mostly a comedy of errors and near misses. I pretty much have another week, two max before I have to pull the plug on this and come up with an alternative idea.
The plot, it thickens. A bill of sale has just appeared in my email inbox and a transaction is likely to commence.
And no, it's not a Miata.
