I will actually be there for a week, but I have one full day to myself. (Sunday) Is there something that should not be missed, or should I enjoy no kids, no spouse and room service?
I am into things like Military Museums and Auto Museums.

You'd probably enjoy going to NASA Johnson Space Center: http://www.spacecenter.org/

You know, you just don't see enough obscure Murry Head references...well played!

You read my mind.
Here is a local chain of restaurants, Pappas Restaurants.
It has been a number of years since I have been to any but they were always good and moderate priced while still being something different than you could get at home. I have frequented Pappasitos and Pappadeaux (Papa-dough)
For Brunch/Lunch, my wife likes La Madeleine. Think of it like Panera Bread but with a french influence.

A least he didn't go the band camp route...

Wtf, those are all chains you could go to just about anywhere. You could visit the the original ninfas on navigation or the original carrabas, which are way better than the franchises. Then there are Houston only places around Washington ave, montrose, and in the heights.
As for non food stuff to do, the museum district, Herman park, beer can house, Johnson space center, Galveston has the lose star flight museum as well.
Agreed, anywhere if you are in Texas (zero in Pittsburgh.) Since I did not know where exactly he would be, it was likely he would be near one.
Which Sunday? You can co-drive my 2 at an autocross if we're running that day. Probably more interesting things to do, but it's an option. The new paleontology hall at the museum is really well done. NASA is fun for a few hours but is waaaaaay out of town depending on where you are.

what Murry Head reference isn't obscure?

Dammit!!! I saw the title and came rushing in here to make the Chess reference, and you guys beat me to it
The last time I ate at Pappasitos, I loved it. I went back recently and the wait was 2.5 hours on a Tuesday night. I guess they have become more popular in the past 12 years!
Thanks for the other links and offers, I'll be there this Sunday but not really sure of my schedule. I hope to get out somewhere, but you know, ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town...
I think I'd be awful interested in going to the space center myself.
Lone Star Flight Museum also looks interesting.

Crowded, stinking, and polluted are all implied when talking about Houston.

Spectacular.
...you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage parlors --
You're in luck. You've got two, count 'em TWO, great car events this Sunday. Assuming you like cars.
On the south side of town (conveniently near NASA) is Keels and Wheels:
http://www.keels-wheels.com/
And on the north is The Concours d'Elegance of Texas:
http://www.concoursoftexas.org/
Why these two events are held on the same weekend involves intrigue, egotistical shiny happy people, and bitterness, but that shouldn't prevent you from seeing some great cars.
