Any cyclist (especially one who rides fully kitted up in a jersey and spandex shorts) has encountered "get a berkeleying car!!!" "Get on the berkeleying sidewalk!!!" "Faggot!!!" or just been flipped off for no reason.

A lot of motorists simply HATE cyclists.

Yah, I've seen that happen. Telling cyclists to get on the sidewalk is stupid, it's dangerous to pedestrians. We need proper dedicated lanes here like they have in Europe and Korea. I only hate cyclists who demand their portion of the road, then want to behave like pedestrians when it suits them. Like the ones that hold you up so you get the red light, then zip left in front of you on the crosswalk.

Going further on the cyclist topic, I've been buzzed/taunted/etc more than once. Unfortunately, sometimes it is escalated, as happen to a top triathlon pro recently in Boulder, CO.

[threadjack] the last time it happened to me was very close to a light that turned red before the car got through. stopped next to it at the light, got off my bike, pounded the passenger window and shouted "When we're moving, you've got the upper hand. But here at this light I'm a grown-ass man and I will berkeley you up!"

i think she cried. [/threadjack]

Ohh that's good--although in this "stand your ground" society, you could end up getting shot for doing that.

Gay??? As far as questioning the sexual orientation of anyone owning the 500 Abarth, I think that's the least of the problems here. I'd be more inclined to question the SANITY of anyone that would pay THIRTY FOUR THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS for that!?!?!???

I can only imagine that most of the sales orders must be signed in crayon, in the activity rooms of mental institutions?

Then again, that may not refute the crazy stigma. ;)

Think of it in terms of a Cobalt SS, Focus SVT, or Shelby GLH-S. factory street fighters that can give bigger, more expensive "sports cars" a bloody nose.

The first 500 I saw was brown and it looked to me like a pile of crap. Brown is just not the right color for a car shaped like that. I've not been able to shake that first impression.

I didn't think the brown was that bad, though I am leaning toward the olive green I we get one.

I was troubled to see that two of the cars my wife and I are considering could be gay. We were looking at the Fiat or the Focus. I am going to have to look elsewhere. Since I was a kid people have thought I may have had a bit of the gay. When my wife and I started dating it was a long distance relationship and many people thought I had made her up to stop the rumors of my possible gayness. As it is when I by fresh cut flowers at the grocery store, or listen to Liza Minelli on the train I get funny looks and comments. I don't know if I could stand having kids in big pick up trucks make fun of my car as well.

I drive a Miata, I wear crocs, I like the Fiat, I was in the Navy. I just fit into this thread.

I'm also starting to think I must be the only person in the world who actually found the back seat of the Fiat to be comfortable. It's small, downright cozy, but I didn't think it was unpleasant.

Wait what? Was it something I said?

It's a great car, loads of fun and still much more testosterone laden than the Smart car it replaces.

If it makes me less manly...meh...I never really needed a car to define my sexuality.

Or maybe that was in response to Aeromoto's comment, in which case, mine was nowhere near $34k, and really who cares either way, its a great car, it does what I need and I can afford it. And we ate all the crayons so I had to sign with a booger smear instead. I don't make the best argument for mental stability.

Great article BTW, and your hair looks fabulous ;)

Now my DD is gay AND the wrong color? :sigh:

Oh well. I guess the Miata/SAABs/brown Fiat are all just outward expressions (albeit not consciously so) of me being a little off. As for the sexuality questions-- it has been my experience that the issue is rarely with the accused.

I enjoyed your article, Lesley. The photos were hilariously awesome. I'm going to forward it to my friend who works at the local Fiat dealership.

Not sure about the Cabrio, but the hardtop is nowhere near $34k fully loaded, and sure there were faster cars out there for the price, but its not always about having the fastest car out there.
