i've heard of pandora before but never used it. today, in a mood for some old-school punk, hit pandora.com and typed in "Angry Samoans". so far i've been treated to Germs, 7 Seconds, Angry Samoans, Ramones, Government Issue, Minor Threat, Misfits, and pandora is now my second favorite website after GRM -- mormon pr0n not included.
edit 30 minutes later: Crass, DRI, TSOL, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies, Scream, The Dicks
edited another 30 minutes again: UK Subs, Meatmen, Exploited, New Bomb Turks, Void, Bad Religion
Pandora is great.... I've also been using Flycast
Been using Pandora for about 2 years now...Love it!
I've seen an iPhone app for it now too...yet another reason I want one.
I dunno. I used it for a few months, really hoping that it'd generate some really good stuff I'd never heard. No luck there.
nice sig, poopie. where'd you come up with that?

@ AC--holy hardcore. Didn't know you were into that stuff.
In terms of that area of music, I'm more of a fan of post-hardcore (if it matters).
<--Sirius subscriber. Not much need for Pandora.
The idea of an iPhone with Pandora is really compelling. What a wicked combo.

+1.
That's the thing that has me considering an iPhone.
I still won't get one, because it's ridiculously expensive for someone like me who uses the phone less than 100 minutes a month (I currently pay $10 / month for cell), but it is a very cool combination.
It's ok, not fantastic. I don't really want to hear Pantera on my downset station, nor do I want to hear Tupac on my Biggie station (for obvious reasons). My James Brown station seems to repeat the same three artists - James Brown, Otis Redding, and Ray Charles. I enjoy them all but would think there should be some more choices.
Sirius - I have two life time subscriptions and while it's nice on long drives to pick up crap, there's a lot of repetition on some of the stations and really annoying dj's on others.
Wow, TSOL.
Just last week, maybe a month, TSOL was discussed on a sailboat website that I frequent. I don't think I have heard/seen them referenced in 10 years before that and now twice in one month.
Come to think of it, TSOL came up when discussing that Lux Interior, lead singer for The Cramps, died at age 60. Man, we are old.

Every time I try to listen to Sirius (it's really nice on those long tows), I end up on the blues station. For a week at a time. What's the price of Sirius like compared to an iPhone contract?
Looks like $70/month for the phone, $7/month for Sirius.
If you don't want to hear something on Pandora, can't you just tell it so? Depends how good the algorithms are, I suppose.

You mentioned Scream. The Scream that I know of was a rough band. The drummer was my nephew, David Grohl. They were best known in Europe. He left Scream to be the drummer for Nirvana. Has done well since.
I love pandora...
I have about 15 stations built depending on my mood...have been using it religeously for about 5 months

Sadly won't stream to Canada :(
I do like finetune, though -- you can build your own playlists, as long as they don't contain any more than 3 songs from the same artist.
With Pandora, I have about thirty stations, and I create a Quickmix of about five or six at a time depending on my mood. The trick to having a really good station is using the thumbs up/down to songs that you love or hate. Don't forget that you can put a song on the shelf for 30 days if you have been hearing it too frequently.
I have pandora on my iPhone, it's pretty cool, especially in the car.
It did take me a while to tweak though. I was trying to tune in some good progressive-rock...And possibly be turned onto something new. Searching Yes turned up a bunch of Pink Floyd, cool but nothing I haven't heard. A search for Triumvirat pulled out some cool stuff though!

yeah dude, that's the Scream. i grew up in DC in the early '80s, but didn't discover DC Hardcore until several years later. i know a girl who dated Dave, and I went to high school with his insurance salesman -- unless the story I heard is just urban legend. If you're his dad's brother, perhaps you could verify the story for me.

i wish i had discovered it sooner. the only DC band I was into when they were current was Dag Nasty. in HS (class of '84) we were all into Motown and CCR, then i jumped straight to metallica when Master of Puppets came out.
honestly, today was the first time i heard Germs and a few of the others. i had been exposed to a bit of this music when i was skating in around '89. i found it funny that i was learning about what could have been the music of my youth from kids 10 years younger than me.
You can get a decent post-hardcore mix by creating a station based on Drive Like Jehu, they're linked to all sorts of great stuff. I manually added to it with some later post-hardcore stuff like Quicksand, etc. My favorite station so far.
I think the trick with Pandora to get quick good stations is to pick bands that are "Kevin Bacon" like, linked to a lot of other good bands. Takes some time to learn how to work the system.

Yeah, I watched Scream perform at a club in DC in the 80's, 401?? Right by the FBI building. Memorable night. I had never seen stage diving or a mosh pit before. Not my style. Dave had long blond hair at that time, and it was fkying. His mother is my sister. Don't know if I can confirm any urban myths.
The thing I love about punk is it's great sense of humor. For that reason I dig on Me First and the Gimme Gimme's. Hilarious.
I'm also in Fist City aka Richmond, Va. During the 80's and on we got a lot of punk run off from DC. To this day Richmond is some kind of metal/punk hold out.

Dave, as someone who once believed as you do, allow me to say that it is worth it. The ability to access the 'net anywhere is damned handy. Want to know if that sale price is a good one? Want to snap a picture of some product to be sure that it is the right one? Not too mention the applications. Just having a unit converter at hand along with a scientific calculator is handy in the shop. Plus there's Dynolicious, etc. If you know someone who can get a discount on AT&T phone service and are willing to share minutes you can drop the monthly price a bit.
Refurbed phones are available now and if you buy a phone already hacked you can use it with any plan you'd like.
