Yesterday I learned that the first time Elvis Presley performed after leaving the Army was a USS Arizona fundraiser.

Growing up, seemed like everyone had a grandfather who served. Mine did.

My grandma who died just one year ago worked in the Dragon rocket factory in KS. She said there was a fire there every single day. Every. Single. Day.
Also, she snuck home some rocket fuel to show her dad. They lit it in the backyard. She said it was like cotton candy and was purple, maybe?

As I recall, my grandfather was in Signal Corps. He saw duty in Africa, Italy and the Philippines. I once interviewed him for a school project. In theory, the paper is here somewhere....

The last WWII survivor that I personally knew died last year. My father in law spent most of the war as a seebee in the Aleutian Islands and was one of the few Americans who fought the Japanese on American soil. After the war he swore never to live anywhere where it snowed again, so he moved to California.

I have a little trouble with the "greatest generation" thing. The guys who fought in WW1, the Civil war and the Revolution might feel disrespected if there were any left around. That said, they were pretty awesome and I miss them very much.
