It has nothing to do with gun control or people's behavior, there's noone out to kill in the cold.
It looks like murderers have met their match, and her name is Mother Nature. The city has gone 8 days, almost 9 without a single murder. Cops believe the weather is to credit for keeping our streets safe. They say since most murders happen outside it might just be too cold to kill. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly says his officers tactics are also a reason for a drop in homicides.

In reply to Wally:
there is a truth to this, petty and violent crime rates drop in inclimate weather pretty much in any major metro.
Less crime in the cold... I am wanting to move north more and more.
Intriguing theory. But keep this in mind..
Winnipeg, Manitoba is the Murder capital of Canada.

Fixed that for you. Did you know that natives make up 75% of the Canadian prison population?
The more you know...

I know a guy that picks up dead bodies for a morgue and delivers them. In summer months he can pick the days that the most murders are going to happen just by the weather. Really hot days mean more murder, and heat waves mean the most violent deaths.
That said there are more deaths (not murders) in cold weather. I guess sickness would be the key cause, but drinking goes up in colder months so I would guess there are more DUI related deaths in colder months also.
