So the Dancer saw it out in the yard today, and she's convinced that it's a mole and not a groundhog. I'm not, but either way it means whatever it is hasn't left and if we don't do something about it once the dog is healed from surgery and is running around free in the yard he WILL at some point encounter it.... and paying a pest control company to trap and get rid of whatever it is will likely cost less and certainly be far less stressful than if the dog gets injured tussling with it...
EDIT: Some quick searching heavily leans toward my being right and it being a groundhog based on what I've seen in the way of holes (like the rather large one right next to the garage wall) and the critter itself. She's convinced she got a good look at it and that it's a mole though, and it's not really worth arguing about since either one would need to go.
As a kid Dad and I used these sulfur based bombs that you lit on fire and then put in the hole and then you quickly cover the hole with a rock and dirt. Usually kills them and they are entombed in there hole.
Another time when I was in my late teens we took 3-4 pool chlorine pucks ground them up and put it in the hole followed by a 3-4 gallons of cheep bleach and then I pored in a couple gallons of muriatic acid. Pour the acid in from a 5 gallon bucket as you want it in as fast as possible. Seal the hole with a rock and then with dirt. This makes mustard gas. You have to be carful with this one as the gas it makes is harmful to you. We went to this option as the sulfur bombs tended to really stink and the smell lingered for a ong time where as the mustard gas solution the gas is heavier than air so it just staid in the hole once it is closed up.
