There were a couple reports of his passing on the HAMB board in the last day or two but then others would say he was still alive...the Hot Rod blog link is broken as well, maybe they've retracted the story?

That's what I'm wondering - people have reported it and then retracted it several times over the last day or so.

That URL definitely used to have a story...and there are some threads on other forums on the topic that have been deleted. Wikipedia hasn't been updated with a death date. Seems it might just be a rumor.

Hot Rod has put the URL back up so it might be confirmed now.

Its hard to believe the Manta Ray was built 50 years ago. I'm getting old.

Most people don't realize that the Mantaray body is metal and not fiberglass. It was based on a Maserati chassis and was powered by a Cobra engine.
