It's a fairly painful experience to watch at home, alone or not. It must be seen in a crowded movie theatre, especially a kind of sketchy one, at midnight on a Saturday night, with a bunch of friends.

Terrific! I can invite my kid's friends, my wife's mom's support group, a couple of my business associates, and my Bible study group and make them all dress like transvestites!

The college I went to ran Rocky Horror every Friday night.. at midnight. It was great fun!

I was a member of the group that programmed our school's theater.

There were just three rules:

We couldn't finish a quarter in the red.

We couldn't show penetration.

We couldn't show Rocky Horror (too messy).

I'm on board with almost all cult movies but never understood the fascination people have with Rocky Horror. I tried to watch several times and within minutes I have to walk away. What am I missing?

You have to watch it with a group of other people, in a theatre, with a live performance in front of the screen. Watching it at home is stupid and pointless.

I never did see it in the theater where people threw toast and everything. That probably would have been more fun than watching it on a 19" TV. Oh, well....

I'm a virgin apparently.

I've never seen it, and reading this thread makes me think I never want to. Strangers dressed as women throwing toast in a sketchy theater? That's what makes it better? No thanks. If I knew how to post pics I would put up a Red Foreman meme about kicking asses or killing people in Korea to illustrate my point, but I don't.

QFT. Count me among the latter. It's been 26 years and all I remember was that Horror in the title should have been Horrible.

I....like it? I don't "love it", but I definitely do not hate it either. I've seen it live a few times, actually 3 different states, and it's funny to hear the different things the audience yells.

But there's always toilet paper.

First time I watched it was at home with the ex-wife, liked it then. We went and saw live performances and showings at the theater.

If you can't appreciate the terrible, campiness of it, I'm sorry. It's good fun.

I may or may not have been pulled over driving home one halloween night dressed as Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

Note: When driving dressed that way it might not be the best idea to leave your wallet in the trunk of your car.....

It's not that there aren't any new ideas, it's just that no one has the balls to take the risks. They'd rather churn out a stream of moderately profitable retreads than take the risk of failing over and over before they find the next Breaking Bad.

I thought that the root of the problem was that remakes and sequels are actually MORE profitable than original movies globally. Reason is that US is not the biggest market for movies anymore. In the US, you can advertise and brand your movie very specifically (and therefore, cost-effectively). In China, you cannot place specific ads to specific groups. Therefore, you cannot cost-effectively market your movie. In that case, the best marketing for your movie is to use the name of another successful movie, to piggyback on a brand that already exists.

Apparently in the US the original hit makes the most money, with the sequels going down by about 10 percent or something each iteration. But in China - the sequels make EXPONENTIALLY more money than the originals because of the marketing factor.

Now that the US is no longer the bigger market, we are getting what we pay for.

So, if you have to see Rocky Horror in a theater to make it fun, it would seem that a tv version is a fundamental miscalculation.

Like Monty Python and many other experiences of my life. You get or you don't. Explanations and justifications are wasted time. I know I lived through the sixties, I'm just a little fuzzy on sequence and detail.
