He's probably having the same problem I had with the last James Bond movie. I was expecting a classic Bond movie, not a new style Bond movie. Without that preconception, it would have been a pretty good movie. With it, it was down right horrible.

It can't possibly be worse than the prequels with JarJar Binks and Christian Haydenson.
I'm finding out for myself in about 3 hours. 11pm was the only opening night ticket locally that had good seating left the day after they went on sale.
Just got back from watching it. I'd love to see it back to back with the original. It LOOKED like the original, all the cruft on everything and the battered 70's tech. And it was a proper prequel, setting up A New Hope nicely. It's a story told at street level.
I quite enjoyed it. I only know the movies and not all the books and comics and cartoons and TV series so I'm not a Star Wars supernerd. Just a guy who saw the original in theaters several times at 7 years old It made the rebellion feel like a proper rebellion, and one with varying degrees of fanaticism. Even the proper X-wings are back.
I just started reading the book "catalyst" which is the prequel to Rogue One. It sets up everything that happens in the movies. For those that want to know, it all starts during the clone wars before the Jedi get killed
I'm glad I didn't read much about it before watching, so many pleasant surprises. Let's just say at least one character I was like "woah, it's him". And like TFA I'll be seeing it again during the week between holidays when I'm off work.

He did. Right or wrong, he hated it.
I don't particularly like theaters, so I'll wait to see it when the DVD comes out.
Went yesterday for a lunch date with the missus. We liked it, some bits were a little silly (why does blaster machine-gun suddenly need to be racked like a 12 ga when the dude is angry??!) and some parts were cool (hammerhead corvette FTW!). Overall though it was a win for the franchise and will keep the whole ball rolling along a while longer.
It felt a little weird at first, not quite Star Wars at the begining...but warmed up to it and felt like a proper Star Wars movie less than 1/2 way in. LOVED it, one of the best of the franchise. Definitely has the best dialog/acting of the entire franchise (Star Wars isn't really known for stellar dialog anyways...) and they didn't play around when it came to the fighting, full on war movie compared to any other one. And the ending ties in so perfectly with ANH...
ANH is now the second part of a two-part movie. Which is all right by me. It'll be fun to watch these back to back to see how they mesh.
Just got back from watching it. Definitely the best written Star Wars movie ever. As an overall package, equal to, or better than The Empire Strikes Back.
Who ever is producing episodes 8 and 9 better step up thier game by a lot.
I have a question. Why do Stormtroopers wear armor? Hit by a blaster? Dead, but guys without armor survive. Hit by a light saber, dead. Hit by a girl with a club? Dead. Hit with a freakin' stick held by a skinny blind guy? Dead.
Seriously, what does the armor do?
makes them look badass? Even in the animated series "rebels" old Captain Rex remarks that the new armor is useless, especially compared to the clone armour he still has
We went today almost 7yo son and some friends. We found it highly entertaining, the robot was awesome.
It's not nearly as dark as 3 or 5. And it's not as slow as some of the others with the long drama sequences. It is mostly action with a few small speeches mixed in. It's SW, it's violent, but def not as violent as "let's slaughter this entire unarmed village because they might have the plans we are looking for." Also not a whole lot of graphic creatures, or weirdo spookiness.
It's also light in light sabers but makes up for it with blasters galore.
Some good humor/sarcasm too.
And a very good handoff to 4.
Liked it a lot, despite some dumb, dumb movie tropes that were inserted for no real reason and didn't really even help the story or action:
1) If I was the Empire, I'd immediately fire my entire IT department. Why does everyone in every movie store data files in bottomless vertical shafts? Are there no IKEA's is this galaxy? Would some nice low shelves not be easier?
2) "Gary, we love your design for this hatch at the base of the communications tower, but before you hand these plans off to the construction department, can you make sure this hatch includes a "manchopper" mode in case there's a power interruption? Thanks."
Also, legit question: What will the future ethical and legal concerns be for featuring digital recreations of deceased actors in movies? I understand Peter Cushing's family approved the use of his image for this movie (and hopefully got his nice fat salary check for it as well). But I'm imagining that we're going to see actual legal precedent regarding this practice sooner rather than later. Although I'd love to see Humphrey Bogart and Heath Ledger in a buddy-cop movie, it seems like as we push further across the uncanny valley she real decisions will have to be made. (PS: Carrie Fisher was real, they just coked her up real solid and it pulled her skin tight).
Great movie, but in terms of weirdly anticlimactic endings, Rogue One is up there with Monty Python and the Holy Grail and hydrolocking a YJ Wrangler by accidentally driving it into a small ocean.

One thing about the Empire, they're not worried about OSHA or anything like that. Everything they build has a 500 foot vertical drop without any safety rails in it. :)
As for the hatch... "Why is this here? I'm not doing it! This episode is badly written!"

Well, it doesn't protect against getting sand thrown in your face.

I found it a lot darker than most of the franchise so far. The deaths are brutal but usually mercifully quick. I did enjoy seeing the "grittier" side of Star Wars. The landside Troopers with their dusty and dirty uniforms.
A friend summarized the feel of it very well: It's like I've been holding in a fart since Jedi, and I can finally let it out.
Having a bit of debate with a family member about Rogue One and the Machete Order. He's saying we update Machete order to: Rogue One, 4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 7. I'm saying Rogue one is a bad movie to introduce new people to the universe. It should just be viewed as a stand alone, or viewed in between 6 and 7 as a logical break in the story arc.
