They turn into red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars, super novas, or black holes, depending on the star's mass.

cute, but no. StarsEnd is/was a prison. It is part of the story about how the Falcon became the Falcon

It's unlikely that Disney will use any material from the old extended universe in it's complete format. Though some things have seeped through in modified forms. We will just have to wait and see.

I just saw it, I know a bit late. It was shown as a chronological special Star Wars Marathon at a local theater.

I think the lack of remembering names is actually part of the strategy of the story telling. We often don't know the names of those who sacrificed their lives for a cause. Princess Leia gets the medal with her brother and lover while:

  • Jyn Erso (Like someone said she is killed by her father's weapon, knows she had some part in her father's death by leading the rebellion there, and knows that every person she loved has been killed before she dies. She would probably have collapsed with PTSD related issues if she survived the battle.
  • Cassian Andor (Just another cog in the machine that we get to know a bit better)
  • Chirrut Imwe (May have been a great jedi, but alas without Rey's luck)
  • Baze Malbus (May have been an even greater jedi master than Chirrut)
  • Bodhi Rook (Imagine the strength to defect from the Empire and then return to fight the most pivotal battle of the entire war to get information on its greatest weapon)
  • Galen Erso (fight/die or collaborate, a fine line to walk he did it well)
  • K-2SO (Sacrifice that was worth it even though the record storage systems was pretty much a sucky method to fabricate some action sequence of characters stuck in high places. I mean what is it with Star Wars engineers and unnecessarily huge vertical falls hazards from structures?)
  • Blue Squadron (They made a difference)

All are simply lost; never remembered. True telling of what happens in war.

The only parts of the movie I didn't like were the CGI princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin. Both took me out of the movie the instant I saw them. I felt they should have just recast them. Bad Idea. I felt the same with the Captain America Civil War segment with the CGI "young" Tony Stark.

Other than the CGI mess I was lost in the world they created. The destruction dolled out by the death star unleashed on two planets was mind numbing as you would expect to witness. Then the attack by Darth Vader at the very end set the tone of why knowing Vader is in the same solar system puts the fear into everyone. The only part I didn't like was the guy trying to pass the data through the partially open door. A skilled Jedi like Vader would have probably shut the door the moment he saw it. It would have gone better if the crew tossed the data through the door and then sealed it before Vader entered the chamber. Then tried to slow Vader down with their deaths to allow the data to get further away.

It was a good movie that put most characters in that position of fight or die, the empire will not allow you to just flee.
