Being the first female anything almost seems trivial now. She's part of the reason why.

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't seen that yet. For sure, a real hero to look up to. We almost named baby Jav "Sally" after Ms. Ride. RIP
It's sad that in today's world there are not many female role models for girls to look up to that are not the slutty ho-bags that are currently on reality TV. Sally Ride was definitely one in the 80's. She wasn't an inspiration to just women, she was to everyone.
Kudos for posting this. With all the garbage in the news, another real life hero has gone un-noticed. RIP.
...and today, we can't put a man or woman in space without asking the Russians for a ride. Makes me sad.

No way I could say it any better. Thanks for doing your part in the space program, Ms. Ride.

x2. But with one small nitpick..should be "Dr." Ride. PhD in physics, one of the reasons she applied for the program in the first place. IMO, another reason to admire her.
Irony dept: the day after Dr. Ride's death is the 115th birthday of another aviation great, Amelia Earhart.
i was listening to Stern and she was a great Tennis player back in the day . Billie Jean king recommended she quit college and turn pro . Tennis player not lesbian . She saw an ad for astronauts in the newspaper and said that is me .

However she was lesbien. And our great country will deny her partner of 27 years surviving benefits.

Yep: http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/first-female-us-astronaut-sally-ride-comes-out
"The pioneering scientist was, a statement from Sally Ride Science announced, survived by 'Tam O'Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years.'
With that simple statement — listed alongside her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin and nephew, Whitney — Ride came out."
Better late than never I suppose, but it's certainly a quiet, classy way to come out.
Eh a shame she didn't do it earlier. She would have been a great rolemodel for the lesbien community.

Dr. Ride mailed her an autographed book a few weeks later, and would email her every so often asking about school. Very classy lady.
Datsun, are y'all flying yet?

I think she was just caught between a rock & a hard place. If she'd been honest when she signed up, they never would have let her fly. If she'd been honest afterwards, Prez Reagan's crazy "base" would have gone nuts and demanded NASA be defunded.
If it's any consolation, my ex-NASA aunt says that everyone pretty much knew about it..and didn't give a berkeley.
Ride, ride, ride, Sally Ride.
That is a tough way to go. Agree she did a lot to inspire a lot of people.

Yup! Done it. My local NAR chapter started flying on a sod farm where the field had a strange shape. I'd hang stuff in the trees around the place just like I did on smaller fields. At least I did it with bigger motors..
