I'm selling some stuff on FBM and someone asked me if I'd take Venmo. I have used Venmo with people I know or trusted but not for complete Rando's.

Is it safe for me to accept thier Venmo payment, and send my stuff away with them? Is there any way they can reverse the transaction and take the money back later?

As far as I know, there is no way for them to reverse the payment.

Wells Fargo lets you know in advance that they can not cancel or reverse the payment after it is made.

It's cash. Behave like you would with cash.

As far as I know Venmo is now like PayPal in that there is a "friends/family" option and a "goods/services" option.

The friends/family is basically like cash. Once you send it, it's gone. The goods/services option involves a fee but also some degree of buyer protection.

I do believe that Venmo reserves the right to reverse transactions that it deems fraudulent, in line with most other payment processors. I could see this being exploited by someone who really had their ducks in a row, but probably not the average person.

All that said, I've been paid for lots of E36 M3 on CL and FBM via Venmo and never had a problem. YMMV, etc

I've had zero problems with it for rando FBMP transactions, though I prefer cash. We do the venmo exchange in person just like you would with cash. "Okay I sent the payment" ...a second later... "And now I see it in my account. All good!" I have also accepted a deposit for a car via venmo before meeting them in person, and that also went well.

It's paypal with another name, literally the same company.  If it gets sent goods/services, they can get their money back.  You want it sent friends/family, at that point it's secure.

I've used Venmo for probably a dozen transactions with strangers and it has been bulletproof.  Just have them send it as not for goods and services and you're protected the same way as if they handed you cash.  The only way for them to get their money back is to basically sue you and have a court order you to refund.  If they send it as goods and services, it comes with a bit of protection for them, but I don't know who is liable for it... you or Venmo's insurance.

I just sold a car to a completely random person half way across the country.  It was so fast.  He responded to my FBM ad with an offer that was palatable, and within 5 minutes I had a Venmo notification for the full amount.  I withdrew it to my bank account and it showed up the next day.  He sent a shipper to pick it up, I handed them the title, and it was gone.  Zero fuss.

I don't leave the money in my account, I immediately transfer it to a separate account that's not associated with my Venmo account. But that said, I've never had an issue paying or receiving money this way.
