I am weighing my options for purchasing a Security Cameras VS Burglar Alarms for Your Home. The only experience I have is last year I purchased the Kangroo security kit came with front door security camera, motion sensors, and siren/keypad. The security camera took pictures and they weren't great, but it was wireless so no drilling into structures. The negative was all around bad quality didn't last more then a month before everything stopped working and I returned. Recently Slickdeals had a deal on UniFi Protect G3 Instant Camera which appears to be high quality but all the reviews that I have seen so far do not answer the question about weather, which I live near a lake in the snow belt. I found these weather sensors that might be nice to pair with a camera 1/2 Mile Hosmart Rechargable Driveway Alarm Wireless Sensor System. It would be nice to have one complete system, does anybody have suggestions?
is there a simple "stand on" door mat that would turn on a camera flash and maybe an alarm too ?
Like the old stores that when you walked in the front door and stepped on the "Welcome" mat a bell went off so the salesman would know he had a customer ,
Put it at your doors , or even your front gate .
We have Ring, I know it's not the most private choice out there but they function well.
Simplisafe worked well for us when we lived in the city

We have 10 Blink cameras and 6 wired cameras that cover 100% of the property from several angles. That and a few of these make the alarm system redundant.
Both the hard-wired camera system and the WiFi router that the Blink system ties to are on UPS power so the cameras stay up for an hour or two even if the power is out. When vandals went through the neighborhood spray painting cars, my house was one of the few that didn't get hit.
The only downside is when something does happen, everyone calls us to see if there is anything on the cameras, including the police.
One thing I'll add. I have Wyze cameras, although I don't really need them in my neighborhood. I got them to watch the dog when I'm at work and to watch and make sure packages don't walk away.
One thing to keep in mind... the price you pay is directly proportional to your privacy. The Wyze cameras I have are wifi, IR, HD, zoom/tilt/pan, and they cost $36 each. They lose money on selling the cameras, which means they're collecting and selling data. They even tell you they are in the EULA. They are connected to wifi, so every website you visit, every GRM post you make, every pr0n you watch, they are selling that data.
Remember- you don't STOP a thief. You only slow them down, deter, or catch evidence of them. A Meth head will smash your window, grab what it wants, and leave the camera will film the whole thing. The cops will "put out an APB" nothing will happen.
many "feel" safer after installing some sort of deterrence. It's false security.
Thats why a gun is a much better option. If you're not home, who cares. Turn it in to insurance. If You are home, KA-BOOM! The next place they invade better have a wheelchair ramp.
I'd like an alarm that's so loud you'd think a nuke plant was on melt down. Add some super bright strobes and all but the most crazy should run like hell.
We started with outdoor cameras at a rental property and now we have them at our home. Our system gives us motion-activated alerts on our phones and is connected to emergency services. Let's just say that some of the footage we've seen has been... insightful.
I want a system that senses motion outside and turns on the flood lights - then progressively plays different sounds. First, dog toenails on a wood floor.. then dogs barking (from a couple different places).. then if motion is sensed inside the house, the sound of a pump shotgun cocking. And turns on some red laser dots. And cameras to capture the reactions.

Add in some haunted house blinding strobe lights for good measure.
I tried a cheap WIFI camera system but they would not connect to the base unit through the brick walls. I took them out and retunred them.
A large breed dog seems to work better then any camera. A lot of junkies don't care about cameras, but don't like the thought of being chewed on!

My local cop advised the best deterrent is a dog that barks with authority. All the rest either slows them down or maybe provides a little evidence after they are gone. He felt alarm/monitoring systems were essentially useless as the perps are usually gone by the time they get the call and respond.

Thats why my wifes trained GSD would not to eat anything that she had not put in his bowl for him! He was about 2 when I came into the family; he accepted me immediately, and and worshiped the ground I walked on before he left us, but even till the end, he would look at her for permission if I fed him! The Rottie she has now was not trained as well, and wouldn't do that, but most times if we both go off, he's with us.
Being from S. FL, she has had one dog shot during a robbery, and knows of good dogs being stolen, so she is very protective of him! His only job (besides love) is to protect HER! As long as the bad guys didn't harm her, he'd help em load the truck!!!

How good of an image can you get with these security cameras ?
We have all seen Liquor store robbery camera footage when you cannot really make out the face of the robber ,
Also if you are doing this , have a couple cameras that will be lined up with the license plate of a robbers car ,
I still think you need to make noise , flashing lights etc before they get close to the house ,
And you will never stop a crack head , but may be able to trace his car.
One of Tom Clancy books has a strobe light that locks peoples nervous systems up long enough to detain them, or crash a plane...
I've had visions of something on the roof of the shop, a motion detector that triggers a noise, so the peeps look up, then zomg, twitching. Plus a camera to record.
I'd get sued by all the innocent victims, plus there is no doubt I'd trip it myself on a weekly basis. A boy can dream, though.

Strobe lights in total darkness are great......as long as it's not pointed at you. Definitely locks you up if you aren't expecting it
I have seen some camera footage that could identify someone, but even then the police would not even look at it. Does anyone here know of a case where a camera did acomplish something ? Besides a feel good or deterrent for bad guys that don't know any better?
