As far as I know, galaxy watches only work with galaxy phones and pixel watches only work with pixel phones.
Not quite. There are certain features that will only work with same-brand phones, but the basic stuff like step counting, notifications, etc, will work with either. Hell, my daughter still uses her Galaxy Watch Active with an iPhone and it works fine. So do her Galaxy Buds, for that matter.
Tom's guide has a good basic intro on smartwatches
The phone specific thing is more critical if you are going to get into the smart portion of the smartwatch. Loading apps and modding screens etcetera tends to need a phone and watch of the same system.
The watch, fitness tracker, and text/call features of a smartwatch will work with most phones except the Iphone+Applewatch that is pretty locked down.
There's an alternative to a full-on smartwatch that might work for you. Something like a Garmin Forerunner 45. It's a fitness watch that will display notifications. It won't let you answer calls or dictate text messages, but the flip side is that the battery life is fantastic and of course it's really good at the basic fitness stuff. I've been using an older version of one for cycling for years, and accidentally found out the notifications were pretty darn useful. My wife has an older Apple and the notifications are the only thing she really uses on it. That plus the fact that it has a slideshow screensaver with pictures of her cats. Not me, just the cats.
Garmin also has one called vivomove that looks like an analog watch because it has actual hands and a very small screen that will display notifications.
I use them both with an Apple phone.
Update. I ordered the Ticwatch (linked on page 1) which comes with a 30-day return window. If I don't like it, I'll start playing with others.
I used to wear smartwatches in the past. My favorite was the Pebble Time Steel, but I also had the Qualcomm Toq, a Galaxy Watch Active, and 2nd gen Moto 360. I went back to digital watches in the past two years. How are you liking the Tickwatch so far, @Curtis73? Did you return it or keep it?
