Glock 19, AK47/SKS variant, spend the rest on good quality training and practice rounds

We think alike aussie.

This. Panic buying is in full effect right now. Weapons that normally sell for $700-$800 are going for 2-3 times that, if you can even find one.
But if you can find one, I'd recommend an M4 clone. There are lots of decent brands--PSA, Colt, BCM, Rock River Arms, S&W, Bushmaster, etc.
Personally, I'd opt for one with a chrome-lined barrel, 5.56mm chamber (can fire .223 and 5.56 rounds, whereas a .223 chamber can't fire 5.56) and a 1:7 barrel twist (so it can stabilize a greater range of bullet weights).
Too many variables to make a pistol recommendation. I like HK, but they're expensive.
Ha, he did say $2K, you could find one of those but not both for that money. And still no money for training, IMHO bad advice

He did make it clear he has minimal knowledge and experience.

Heres the trick and its grassrooty. The Saiga is a sporting rifle, not assault. The reason is it has no pistol grip, a magazine of 10 rounds, but is the same build as an AK. They cannot import an AK-47 from Russia. The Saiga is built in the same factory that the original AK-47s were assembled in. Since the Saiga (of any caliber) is not an assault rifle, it can be imported. The Saiga is made with 14 primary parts. They are all Russian. If you drop the foreign count down to 10, it can legally be transformed into an assault rifle. You have to do the work. I'm working on it now. I bought my Saiga for slightly over $400.00 at a gun show.
I'd be happy to explain more, but you have to be interested, so let me know. Here are examples of the Saiga conversion.

Custom converted Saiga:
Build it to your preferences for under $1,000 (Edit: I got everything for less than $700 actually). Use the rest to buy a nice Para.

Nope. You won't. So just admit that, like 90% of gun owners, you're buying the gun because you think they're cool and that shooting them is fun. And that is perfectly fine.

Well... Do you ever plan on going to Detroit or St Louis?
Like the argument over Ford vs Chevy, it really just depends. I recently decided to downsize and limit the types of ammo that I would need. Everything is either 7.62, .380, 9mm, .32 or 12ga. You can buy SKS for about $300 and either build it as a full tactical rifle or just install a large detachable magazine and be happy. The best features of an AK and much better "knock down" ability than AR. Pistols are just whatever appeals to you although I like Rugers and Keltechs(.380) or Walthers and Taurus(.32) The 9mm is my Mac 9 which has been fully optimized.
Guns are like shoes to me; each fit for different situation. YMMV
Got my last numbers matching SKS two weeks ago. Yeah, the gun world has gone crazy since then. I think that you can still find SKS for a bargain compared to the other so called assault rifle bases.
In reply to whenry:
At work, we have come to the conclusion that dealers have tacked $600 onto every "assault rifle." I'm still of the mind that no weapons will be banned.
My plan on this one is to keep the base wood stock and to install only large mags. The recent uproar in NY does further reinforce my plan to have NO guns that are in the system. I do have a carry permit in Tn along with the majority of the residents of Tn but no registered guns. I sold or traded some interesting guns to get to this place but felt that I needed to consolidate the ammo requirements.
Saigas have also suffered from the price increases. Your best bet for finding an AR15 is Academy Sports or a place like that. The big box stores still seem to be selling their incoming shipments at normal price. I saw some Remington R-15's there today for $850.
If you are asking these sorts of questions, you are not likely properly trained to handle firearms, and need to learn that before getting any of your own, let alone a handgun or relatively short and easy to swing around carbine. You don't just learn proper muzzle and trigger discipline overnight.
Just sayin.
$2k will get you a strippo AR right now, on a good day. Wait a year for the chaos to die down, learn how to handle and care for firearms in the meantime.

don't worry.... that's a long way away.
i blew it off but she keeps bringing it up!!! you better get the rifle while you still can..........i am not a gun guy but she seems to think we might need it or we should get it while we still can........should i buy a rifle and a handgun......what would i do with it?
If you want them and your wife insists, then sure. Guns are a lot like cars. You either buy them to use and you take the depreciation hit, or you buy a unicorn and hope that it increases in value. Buying a gun to just have a gun should be a disposable investment.
will i need it? ok......what kind should i get, it you had 2 grand what 2 would you buy, i have always heard the Glock 9mm??????? i live in a gated neighborhood with security will i have to defend my house or family???
You won't need it. The chances that you will need it are one in a few million. If you live in a gated community, your chances of needing a gun are reduced by a few trillion.
Have you had to defend your house or family in the past?
I am a HUGE gun-rights advocate, but please look at statistics. If your house is invaded and you don't pull a gun, your chances of survival are nearly 100%. If your house is invaded and you DO pull a gun, your chances of survival are significantly reduced.
IMHO, if you are a highly-gun-educated individual, you can make the responsible choice about the guns in your house. I own over 100 guns, including some handguns. They are all insured. If someone wants to steal them, I would never presume to endanger the life of me (or the invader) by using one of those guns to prevent theft.
Now.... if an invader were trying to rape my wife.... that's a different story. BUT... I could just as easily defend her with a baseball bat, a kitchen knife, an office chair, or a partially full can of beer.
.... but the full can of beer is something I might not sacrifice.

I like you.
Get ready for these prices to stick guys, if they do ban what they want they will be permanent. Look back at prices before the brady bill ban, those stuck until the sport rifle version of the ARs came out.
My advice is to buy the lower receiver for your "assault rifle" and normal capacity mags (over 10rds) before they steal/govern away your right to get them at reasonable prices. Build the rest of the rifle later with the non banned parts. The more you get the better off you will be, it's like buying gold the prices will go up as the value of the US dollar goes down.

Anything specific you want to know? I've been ordering parts online to end up with a custom weapon. Very neat and fun project. Yes, some parts are on back order, but they'll get here. I sell firearm equipment (yes, we sill have AK-47 surplus mags for $29.99) and will be continually tweaking my weapon.
The fist weapon I played with ran me up over $1K, but I highly doubt I'd ever get all that money back out of it. Just like a car: The cat is much more dangerous. Just doesn't have the reach.
