We bought a new house and are in the process of moving in. It has an irrigation well but the breakers that feed the pump are taped over and labeled "don't turn on" (and are off). I was walking by the well head and heard what sounded like a small fan and noticed the leaves above the well head moving. Sure enough the hole in the cap of the well the pipe goes through that is usually plugged was open and air was blowing out. It continued to blow for the multiple hours we were there today. I did some googling but I trust you guys more. Any of you know?
My first thought was that they's drilled into a cavern (that had an opening somewhere to the surface) and since they had probably used that well, since they'd hooked up the sprinkler system to it, that the water level had dropped
Well it's either that or that's not a well, but one nostril to a really huge beast that's asleep so you'll get an inhale later

Well, if you have a sealed hole in the ground with one outlet (through the well cap), it seems that it has to be coming from the level of the ground water rising - has it been raining hard upland from your well?
The only other thing I can think of is that there is actually a pipe or a crack passing through the well casing that is exposed to the surface winds that is pressurizing the well. Might need to drop a camera down to see if you can see any pipes coming through the casing and, if you find anything, see if you can locate where it emerges and cap it.
Of course, your well could also be possessed or be a portal to the underworld...

Given what carguy123 said, it might be a good start to get a couple of hundred feet of rope and a weight. Drop it down and see if you ever hit water.
Didn't think to look where you live. Seems like I remember that there are a couple of sink holes in Florida. Maybe your well is on top of one?

Natural gas was the first thing that occurred to me, too, depending on where you live.

Warm air rises. As the earth heats up, this is a vent for warming air to escape?
That sounds like natural gas - if it's coming out it's a lot more environmentally sound to burn it for heat or power, than to flare it, than to let it leak.
Have you had a chance to talk with people in the area to see if there has been any drilling going on?
My wife’s grandma had this happen. The local utility put in a gas well. She got free natural gas out of it and sold the overage to the company.
I'd have the power company come and check it out. If it is gas,nothing to play with and you become a winner

Geologically I doubt natural gas in that part of the world. It's more likely to be a well connection to a karst feature.
My cousin had a plumber come and cut the welded cap off his new drilled well so he could connect it to to the house and it had a build up of methane gas which almost ended very badly. Fortunately his head was not in the line of fire when it ignited.
