" He simply tired in the end and he just closed his beautiful eyes and that was that." Lady Moss.

Sir Stirling passed away peacefully yesterday. RIP Sir.

He is why people of my generation drive with our arms stretched out. One of the greats.

But not forgotten! And never will be. "One of the greats," indeed.

I had the good fortune of crossing paths with him a few times. He was a true gentleman. He certainly knew how to live... and I suppose if you have to die, that's not the worst way to go about it.

You always just assume your hero’s will live for ever.  We have lost a great one.

Surely one of the greatest of all time, and without a doubt the best to never win a championship. And that was only because of his loyalty to British teams. And the last of his era. A man who raced agaist Fangio, Hawthorne, Ascari, Hill (Phil and Graham), Clark, Brabham, Surtees, and any number of other legends, and was the equal of any of them.

Netflix just came out with a documentary about Fangio. I think I'll watch it tonight. It's time to revisit that era.

A real legend through the golden era of racing. Had the pleasure of meeting him at a few events over the years and he was  always so sharp.

One of the very, very greats, fully worthy of remembrance. If you don't have "the racing driver" by Denis Jenkinson on your bookshelf, go get it. It goes deep into how a racing driver does what he does, as well as what makes one tick. And he spent some 30k miles at speed, codriving with Moss on events like the '55 Mille.  I think I'll go re-read it. Again. Well raced, Sir Stirling, well raced.

My biggest racing hero all my life. Started with reading Denis Jenkinsens account of riding shotgun with him in the Mille Miglia. And he was passionate and active in the sport right up until yesterday.
