For all of you people suffering in the nice weather down south.
My rules I wish people followed.....
I think that sums it all up, while sitting alone at a stop light on a 4 lane road, I watched a Volt trying to turn onto the 4 lane road.....the guy understeered straight across the road, in front of me(I actually reversed a little), into the ditch, and into a tree. He never lifted off the gas and had full lock the whole way. Evidently low rolling resistance isn't good in the winter combined with "SMUG"
I'm on the NW side of Baltimore and this morning it took me an hour to go the normally 10 minute commute from Pikesville to Woodlawn on this map:
Yes that was this morning's traffic. For a inch or two of snow.
A few things made this one a bit more difficult than others of larger snowfall. It is really quite cold out there, meaning that the snow that fell this morning wasn't melting despite high traffic volumes, road treatment didn't do much, and there wasn't enough snow to plow.
Combine this with the fact that mid-Atlantic drivers believe that "All Seasons" mean "Invincible", and you've got a mess on your hands.
I consider snow tires "winter tires" and I run them November through March regardless of how much snow we've got. They work pretty well in rain, too.
I drove to work in more snow (but not much) and traffic this morning. 90% was in 3rd gear or lower. Roads were pretty clear by my standards, yet everyone is running around in their summer tires or noseasons and bringing the pace to a crawl.
thats a normal day here in canada.. we got hit with 3" of snow sunday night. the drive was fun but only because people forgot how to drive.
all 3 routes to work for me were red on the map above, I took to the unplowed (and thus unused) right lane, note lane not shoulder, of 95 south and beat everyone else into the office by more then an hour. Berkeley sitting in a lane tire tracks to go 2-3 mph when I can go 20-30mph in my 3" powder field.
I was plowing snow the whole way to the interstate with the fukus this morning. I have a feeling my entire engine bay is or will be packed with snow again. Might need that insulation as its been hard to start the last few days.

Heyyyyy... I got an idea: slow down going up that long, steep hill. No, better yet, hit the brakes. Ugh. I will pass you on the outside when you get stuck. I will. Just be glad its so damn cold otherwise, my middle finger would be proudly hoisted high out the window.
That much snow would have shut down the entire state. People around here can't drive in the rain, much less the snow.
wow, your roads were much clearer than mine just 30 or so miles east of you.
There were sooo many accidents in teh Pittsburgh area this morning that the radio people ran out of time to describe all of the delays.
I judge the road conditions on my morning commute by the number of wrecked vehicles I see. It doesn't count if they are just stopped on the side of the road. They have to be in the ditch, sunk up to the axles, upside down, front end ripped off, rear end bashed in, on their side, etc. to get counted. I keep a sub count of the number of those vehicles that are Mustangs. So a 32-8 would be 32 wrecks, 8 of which were Mustangs.
I live a few miles from a metro station. It usually takes me 10-15 minutes to get there (depends on traffic).
After 45 minutes I was less than halfway and headed into more congested areas. Said Eff that and turned around and went home.
Wasnt about my car, it was everyone else. Every time I stopped I lived in terror that someone would plow the back end of my Miata.
At least going home should be easy. Traffic shows green, at the moment.
