Too many folks worrying about what it wasn't and can't enjoy it for what it was.

I wonder how many people today feel that way about the prequels.

It's not just me either. This film has the lowest opening of all Disney Star Wars films including Solo, is lambasted by critics and audience alike, and even the actors hated it. I finally understand why my Trekkie friends were so upset.

It did not open lower than Solo. The reviews are mixed. And the audience scores are actually quite good.

Look, man, I get it. You didn't like it. Plenty of other people don't, art is subjective, and all that. But what I don't get is why you keep trying to convince everyone else that they shouldn't. Some of us (like me) are happy to sit in a theater, hear that John Williams score, and see the pew-pew-pew. I've never held this series to a high storytelling standard. It's a space western about magic swordfighting priests, fercrissakes!

Never thought of it that way. Awesome.

If it is any consolation Javelin, my whole family hated it. These people who have been to every opening night until this one. Well my brother didn't hate it, but he's 10 so of course he was always gonna love it.

Gotta agree with Javelin here.  The movie was awful.  A complete disappointment.

From ESB:

Obiwan, "That boy is our last hope."

Yoda, "No, there is another."

Yes, referring to Leia. And when Luke went MIA it was Leia who led the resistance and Leia who trained Rey.

My biggest disappointment of the star wars thing: The last saber battle between Obiwan and Vader. Looked like a couple totally untrained geriatrics. What a tragedy. I can't believe anybody even watched star wars after that mess.

One plot point let go out of three movies versus seventeen plot points let go in each movie. Nobody said they had to be perfect, but you also can't pass off a Mitsubishi Mirage as a Porsche 911.

The audience score at rotten tomatoes has been proven to be a complete fabrication. Look at the audience scores on literally every other site.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to not like it anymore than you and others are trying to convince me to like it. I point out what is bad about it and you point out what is good. I like reading what people like, sometimes it gives a new perspective and lets me enjoy it more. Sometimes it's a mistake like with the Bothans and Rogue 1, and pointing that out helps others enjoy something more.

I don't know, you spent 3 pages trying to convince us we should hate it before it even came out on another thread, but whatever.

My only complaint was not enough Sith Trooper.  I dig the costume (as a 501st Legion stormtrooper) and was hoping for more action.  But only maybe 60 seconds or so of screen time near the end.  Oh well.  Still like the costume.  Han's little memory cameo got me pretty good.  Chewie reacting to Leia...yeah especially since we know the actress really passed away.  I'll be seeing it again while I'm off for the holidays, maybe even a 3rd time till the Blu-Ray release.

I'm seeing way more positive comments on my various groups than negative, so I can believe audience scores.  But then again I've never let a vegetable-based online site tell me wether I like a movie or not.  Meh.  They were ready to hate it before it released.  (See also above.)

Just saw it last night. I was actually less disappointed than I expected to be.

This one, like both EPS 7 and 8, suffers dreadfully from a needlessly self-inflicted fatal wound: the timeline.

ALL of this action allegedly takes place in 16 hours.  Sixteen hours  - 2/3 of a single day.

Lets put that another way:  let's say they found out about the impending attack 10 minutes into the movie - close enough. And let's say that the actual launching of the fleet happens 20 minutes from the end of the film - also close enough.   That leaves 2 hours of run time for the bulk of the storyline.

Which means that for every screen minute of action, there are literally only 7 minutes of actual, 1:1 real time allotted for everything else that has to get done in support of that action.

Meaning cross-galaxy travel time.  Departure and approach. Repairing, fueling, and arming ships and people.   Eating. Hell, explaining things they already know to people, let alone finding out all the things they didn't know.

Luke apparently spent months if not years searching for the way finder thing. Rey solves it in under an actual hour from first hearing about it to having it in her hand, including travel time, locating it on an entirely strange planet, and escaping with it. And in less than that same hour, Kylo does the same thing to chase her down!

Lando, in a similar hour, flies somewhere, convinces a thousand crews into following him into battle, they arm and fuel a thousand ships, and make the trip back through the maelstrom to arrive at the Sith world!  Maybe 90 minutes, tops.

There are dozens of similar things through all 3 of the third trilogy. And all of that ludicrous timing could have been avoided by just not saying - and repeating - the stupid 16 hour thing.

Ok, just saw it. And I’m not a real fanboi here - I LOVE SW, but I’ve seen the prequels once each, solo and R1 once each, original trilogy 2-3 times each, and now the new trilogy and Mandalorian. Never any of the cartoons and never any of the other universe stuff.

I thought it was awesome. My only problems were with it being too choppy/ADD. Stay on a single scene for a few minutes, don’t chop each scene and flip flop between them.

Had no problem with Palpatine coming back - if Luke and Yoda can come back in memory form and do force lightning, catch a lightsaber, and pull an X-wing out from underwater, there is no reason Palpatine can’t somehow create/recreate/clone himself. And I think if you’re looking deeper into it and find issues, either you need to lighten up and have some fun, or you just completely misunderstood how strong Palpatine is/was.

My questions from it:

1: was there any significance to her Lightsaber being yellow?

2: how the hell did Ben get from the Death Star to the Sith world?

3: wtf happened when Chewie was captured? I thought for sure it was his transport that was blown up.

Probably seeing it again with my wife in the next few days.

EDIT: In my first paragraph above, I think I had some errors in terms of how many times I'd seen the films. I've seen Phantom Menace and New Hope at least once each when I was a kid, and PM once since then, NH probably 3 times but only one sit-down to watch it. I may have seen the Prequels and ESB/RoTJ when I was a kid but don't recall them. Then I saw R1 and Solo in theaters, and then on Netflix since then but wasn't committed to watching on Netflix.

In reply to mtn :

1. None whatsoever beyond it was a color not done before.

2. In a standard Imperial TIE/ln fighter. Which do not have hyperdrives.

3. It was Chewie's transport that got blown up. Thanks to filming at least three major versions of the story and editing up until the last minute many of these incontinuities exist.

Now you see why it's so hard to watch for a big fan. And go back rewatch the first six to get an idea of what it's really crappy to the overall storyline to have the emperor back.

Javelin... still can’t see it from your POV. And while I haven’t seen all the movies a bazillion times, other than New Hope and Phantom Menace, I saw all of them for the first time in the last 5 years, minimum 25 years old when I saw them. And I’ve seen all of them including R1 and Solo in the past year. I just can’t understand why people are so upset at it - although it seems to be very few people, even the folks who have bookshelves dedicated to SW stuff.

I suppose it would be the same as my dislike for Harry Potter Cursed child? But even that I can understand, I just don’t care for.

In any case, my 2 issues with the film are overall pretty small IMHO and can easily be explained away - at least for me.

Wow, I'm kinda glad i never got THAT into SW.  Saw it twice in 77, once at Grandma's house and convinced mom i had to see it (she didnt find out about the firsttime until the next summer, yes, the ass whuppin hurt, but was worth it) and started a tradition with my son where i check him out or we see it as soon as school is out on opening Thursday. As a father, i did my duty and we have had marathon weekends twice, once in the order they were released, once in chrono order.  We Star Wars/Trek/D&D geeks were kinda outcasts when i was 15 (1985) and wouldnt have dreamed of getting this worked up with other fans like us.  Yes, we had discussions about things, debates of meanings and i was even a spectator in a Klingon language battle where 4 dudes were trying to see who had the best vocab and pronunciation we were never like some things im seeing now.  I feel like none of the first few were made to go this distance and the current stuff isn't near the experience we had before, but the upside is they arent using flashlights and camera parts for props anymore either.  I like them all, and arguements between long time fans and new fans isnt gonna make anybody happy, and may even do the franchise harm Kind of a rant, sorry, thanks.  Set your phasers to stun, accelerate to ludicrous speed, roll for damage and may the force be with you.

About the yellow light saber with the black handle...

Where did it come from, and when did she actually use it?

The first I noticed it was at the very end when she buried Luke's and Leia's sabers on Tatooine. Somehow I missed where it came from and when we saw it in action, because she definitely used L +L's fighting Palpatine.

This is why people can't have intelligent debates anymore. In an opinion thread I speak my opinion backed up with observations, facts, and evidence from the other films. Other people have chimed in with different viewpoints and we've had an excellent discussion and come to understanding one another's viewpoints. And then you drop in with name calling and butt-hurt. Sad.

Isn’t building your own lightsaber part of becoming a Jedi? I thought she did built it after the war.

Also, any chance that the handle was made from her staff? I thought it looked like it but never really paid attention to the staff.

Just saw it again. The biggest problem I had, the chewie-transport problem, seemed like it sort of disappeared this viewing. You never actually saw the transporter (either of them) take off, you just saw one of them already in the air, admittedly at low altitude. And there was never enough of a wide angle shot to show if there had been more than one. Small detail, obviously put in there to confuse people. Not gonna worry about it, because SW is MADE for things like this (Han did/didn’t shoot first).

Anyone catch Ben and Hans talk on the Death Star? “Dad, I...” “I know”. Missed that the first time.
