after your dorkdom reaches a certain point, you no longer grab at low hanging fruit...

LOL. Okay. I'll take that advice, oh Ultima one.
As far as good ones go I gotta go with Harry Kalas. I loved listening to him growing up.

+100000000 for that ...
my choice for good is Vin Scully ... but I grew up a Dodger fan, so I might be biased
and even though he wasn't the greatest announcer that ever opened his mouth I always loved listening to Harry Caray
I think that's why Madden was always accompanied by Pat Summerall. You could literally hear the whiskey flowing out of his comments and his dry humor was enough for you to forget about Madden for a few minutes.
Steve Levy and Barry Melrose calling a Ranger/Islander game. Sounds like two guys kickin back on the couch drinking some brews.
Hate: Skip Carey. Get him another drink. Does he even watch the damn game? (caveat: I HATE the Braves.)

...If Fox really wanted an enjoyable broadcast, they would pull an announcer from each team's regular crew so they wouldn't have to totally shoot in the dark, or unconvincingly read something the production crew handed them. If you've actually watched the team all season, most of the comments made by the national broadcast crew are just flat out wrong.

Plus, it would be hiliariously awesome to have the two guys in the booth pulling for opposite teams instead of trying to be "neutral".
^^^^^^^^^^This...sooo sooo SOOOOO much this
What drives me waaay up the wall is how the announcers will drone on and on and on and on and on and on and on, gushing praise, love, and worship till its ankle deep around the players feet....for which ever team is winning, regardless of what they mightve said last week, or even if the team is really any good. And when the lead changes, in mid sentence, they will begin gushing over the other team. Just call the plays when theyre happening, then STFU and just enjoy some peace when theres a lull in the action.
like the announcer in Major League?
Steve Stone listening to Harry Caray whine.....

I have 20 years of Indy 500 attendance and Tom Carnegie was truly the voice of Indy.

I used to say that. I'd take ten more years of Madden if I never had to hear Collinsworth again.

Vin Scully is the greatest sports announcer of all time. Watching him calla game is like listening to your grandfather tell you stories about baseball for three hours...assuming your grandfather had been involved in the game for 60 years. And assuming your grandfather had a voice as brassy as a trombone.
That Barry Manilow comment from McCarver in last night's game was absolutely bizarre.
Oh come on, they're not ALL bad.
I have another one to add. Turned ESPN on this morning to check the highlights from the Bucs game last night and of course it's only World Series bs and that guy Karl Ravech is easily one of those horrible sportscasters for ESPN.
And I can't believe I forgot this guy. Gary Danielson, if you are a fan of SEC football on CBS at 3:30PM you've heard this asshat and his doodoo of the mouth.

I've never heard those guys, but have on occasion watched hockey on either ESPN, or Versys, and I have to say, it has been by far, the worst play by play and colour commentary I've EVER heard. No wonder you guys don't like hockey

the commentary has nothing to do with my not liking hockey ... at least on TV ( never been to a live game ) ... it's mainly the inability to follow the puck ... many yrs ago ESPN developed something something ... that allowed the puck to be highlighted instantly everywhere it went ... made watching the game possible ...especially for the casual fan
+I don't see the reason for allowing the fighting .. ( see .. told you I wasn't a hockey fan )
Hockey, I don't know the finer points, but God do I love to watch.
What is nice about sports showing at the (most)resturants, is all the TVs are muted. What sucked last night was every TV was a football game. So I followed the rest of game 2 on my phone.

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are my favorite tv sports braodcast team.
All of you guys ragging on sports broadcasters...........seriously, how many different ways can they state the obvious? What else can the possibly say?
"So and So's mom made spaghetti last night for dinner since its his favorite meal" then you would all be bitching about them talking about stuff that is irrelevant.

And what, no one's mentioned Marv Albert yet?

they are freakin' annoying- the idiots on tv that think they have to spout off a stat for everything are the reason idiots out in public think they need to spout off a stat for everything.
they are right up there in the same league as the talking heads on the cable tv news networks- i honestly think they get paid by the word and it doesn't really matter if anything they say makes any sense or has any grounding in reality as long as they sound like they know what they are talking about and believe in what they are saying.

You don't honestly think they are paid by the word, these guys sign yearly contracts with the networks. You're just trying to find some way to justify your opinion.
I'll wait for you to post a link to Jalopnik stating how you haven't read Jalopnik in 2 years since XXXXX left.
It's not that the Internet is bad, its that people think their over-the-top criticism matters. Or is relevant.
